Balto

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 6 years

♂, born ca. 2020 - kräftigin Spain Balto is a ca. 2020 born German Shepherd-mixed-breed male dog with a shoulder height of ca. 62 cm. Passersby were drawn to Balto when he was nearly hit by a car in front of a supermarket. The notified police could not find a chip, thus no owner was identified, and brought Balto to the local animal shelter. During the required probation period, no one inquired about the lovely fellow. Balto must have had a home, as he is still a bit chubby and has well-groomed fur. He is very people-oriented, enjoying the affection and attention of the caretakers. Balto also shows clingy behavior and does not want to leave the people. He uses his strength unconsciously, but never in a mean way. He is simply not aware of his strength. His future person should be clear about this. Balto is compatible with other animals, although other dogs often avoid him due to his size, as he is already a rather imposing figure. And when he has his lively play phase, a smaller dog might sometimes be "overlooked," but he does not do this on purpose. Balto is still overwhelmed by the animal shelter and the daily routine there, which unsettles him, and one can see that he does not feel comfortable. Who can give Balto a wonderful home, ideally a house with a garden, a task, and the constant family connection he needs? He will not be rehomed for guard or protection duties, nor in a kennel setting. Balto is looking for people with whom he can live and be present everywhere with his cheerful nature. Balto is already neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and tested negative for Mediterranean diseases. He is located at the animal shelter in Rota, Spain. The adoption fee for Balto is 460 Euro. About Balto

What life with Balto looks like

Balto is a adult mixed breed dog waiting at Ein Freund fürs Leben e.V. in Berlin.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Balto, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Balto?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Ein Freund fürs Leben e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Balto on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Balto if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Ein Freund fürs Leben e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Balto already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Balto isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Ein Freund fürs Leben e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Balto and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
