Barlou

Male · Young · 1 year

Barlou arrived at our shelter alongside Liberty and Blue after their owner’s hospitalization. Unfortunately, their owner never returned to retrieve them, and today, Barlou awaits a new family that will not abandon him. Before his arrival at the shelter, Barlou lived unhappily isolated from his two companions. Due to difficulties in cohabitation with them, he spent most of his time confined to a bathroom. A life that did not allow him to flourish or enjoy the presence of his humans as he deserved. Barlou is a lively, energetic, and affectionate young dog. Behind his sometimes imposing demeanor lies a sensitive dog who needs time to earn his trust. When meeting new people, he can be wary, barking or growling to maintain his distance. But once introductions are made and trust is established, he reveals a completely different personality: playful, tender, and very close to his humans, he adores sharing moments of intimacy. On walks, Barlou is a pleasure to walk. He walks without pulling on the leash and greatly enjoys outings. Like his companion Liberty, he never resists the pleasure of rolling in mud puddles when the opportunity arises! He is also clean, but his future home will need to start from the beginning with daily routines to offer him a clear and consistent framework. Given his past and his difficulties with other dogs of the same species, we are not taking the risk of placing him in a home where another dog already lives. We do not know his interactions with cats, but as a precaution, we will also prioritize a placement without cats. Not suitable for homes with cats.

FR·Show original

About Barlou

What life with Barlou looks like

Barlou is a young adult dog waiting at Perwez) in Sans Collier.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇧🇪Adopting from Belgium

Belgian shelters operate under regional law (Flanders, Wallonia, Brussels each have their own rules). All adoptions include the Eurochip, vaccinations, and a stewardship contract. Several Flemish shelters partner with Dutch and German rescue networks.

Frequently asked

Adopting Barlou, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Barlou?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Perwez) handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Barlou on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Barlou if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Perwez) will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Barlou already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Barlou isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Perwez) early rather than rehoming privately; they know Barlou and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (FR). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
