Baru

German Shepherd · Male · Adult · 4 years

Note: If interested, you can meet me at SOS Hundehilfe Prignitz e.V. (about 2 hours away from TH Berlin). Please contact directly: www.sos-hundehilfe-prignitz.de I am Baru … a gentle German Shepherd puppy with a big heart and an emotional backstory in my luggage. Would you like to learn more about me? I am a truly loving and friendly guy who just wants to belong. I would also be great for engaged new dog owners. I get along with other dogs and can also handle understanding children. I bring a calm, balanced demeanor with me – and a lot of potential to become your faithful companion. It seems as though I haven't had the chance to learn much in my previous life – but I am open, eager to learn, and ready to catch up. I was brought to the animal shelter as a found dog. It was then discovered that I am still registered with my breeder – but unfortunately, she did not want to take me back. Important to know: I pull very strongly on the leash during dog encounters – so be prepared and able to handle this. Due to my mild hip dysplasia (HD) and beginning coxarthrosis, head work is particularly valuable and better than too much physical exertion for me. I love it when we solve small tasks together and learn from each other. Physically, I am a bit limited, but my heart is in the right place. I wish for … a quiet home (preferably a house with a garden without stairs), where I can arrive at my own pace. A place where I can be supported, but not overwhelmed. Dog training classes are important because I still have so much to learn – together with you. You should be sensitive and patient, give me security, and have a desire for a real human-dog team. Then I will blossom, I promise. Ready for a gentle giant with a big heart? Then feel free to contact me through the application form or reach out to my caretakers at the Struppi-House: I look forward to a new chapter.

About Baru

What life with Baru looks like

Baru is a large adult german shepherd dog waiting at Tierheim Berlin in Berlin.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Baru, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Baru?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Berlin handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Baru on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Baru if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Berlin will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Baru already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Baru isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Berlin early rather than rehoming privately; they know Baru and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
