Basil

Male · Adult · 6 years

Basil is an intelligent, sensitive dog looking for an owner who can offer him clarity, structure, and confidence. He is a dog who is strongly attached to his people and likes to work together, but can become unsure quickly in new situations. When Basil feels stress or finds something overwhelming, he can react with barking or outbursts. This comes from fear and uncertainty, not from aggression. He therefore needs someone who can be calm and consistent with him and help him feel that he doesn't have to handle everything himself. With the people he trusts, Basil is a gentle, affectionate dog. He enjoys cuddles, attention, and being together. He knows many commands and likes to learn. He enjoys walking, working with his owner, and even going for jogs. At home, he is housebroken, calm, and likes to be in his crate. For Basil, we are looking for an experienced and stable owner, without children or other animals, in a quiet environment. A life in the city would give him too many stimuli. He does not tolerate other dogs and cats well, so a single placement is best for him. Medically, Basil gets a pill every day, Apoquel, for his skin allergy, and is washed every few weeks with a special shampoo. Basil is not a dog for everyone, but for someone who can earn his trust, he is a loyal, smart, and sensitive dog. With patience, clarity, and love, he can fully blossom.

NL·Show original

About Basil

What life with Basil looks like

Basil is a large adult dog waiting at Dierenbescherming Mechelen in Mechelen.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇧🇪Adopting from Belgium

Belgian shelters operate under regional law (Flanders, Wallonia, Brussels each have their own rules). All adoptions include the Eurochip, vaccinations, and a stewardship contract. Several Flemish shelters partner with Dutch and German rescue networks.

Frequently asked

Adopting Basil, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Basil?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dierenbescherming Mechelen handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Basil on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Basil if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dierenbescherming Mechelen will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Basil already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Basil isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dierenbescherming Mechelen early rather than rehoming privately; they know Basil and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
