Baxter

Shih Tzu · Male · Senior · 10 years

Baxter with the nickname – Baxter George Micheal is a shy little chap when he first meets new people, and when he feels comfortable with you, he enjoys a fuss especially behind his ears or around his shoulders. He is affectionate on his own terms, and he will come to you when he wants a stroke. He will be your shadow and follow you around when you potter around the house and garden unless he is sound asleep in his cosy bed. Baxter enjoys treats and he knows a few tricks including a sit. Baxter is a fair-weather kind of guy and if it’s not raining, he enjoys short walks on the beach, the moors, parks or gardens. He is not a fan of getting dirty or wet! He enjoys playing with toys and having a game of fetch with you. It is important that Baxter can experience his own ‘safe space’ where he can take himself off to enjoy his things, like his toys and bed, comfortably without the fear that something will be taken away from him. Give Baxter the understanding he needs, and you’ll find him to be a lovely little companion that enjoys to be a couch-potato. Meet Baxter the ten-year-old Shih Tzu. He’s a senior gent looking for understanding, gentle and compassionate adult adopters who will give him time to build confidence and give him a safe space that he requires for his bed and his toys. Baxter will need a home with no visiting children. He is looking to be the only dog in the home and out and about he would benefit from walks with calm, smaller dogs. He is usually worried by bigger dogs. Baxter has no history around cats, small furries, or livestock. He would benefit from living in a quiet area with limited traffic and noise. He warms up to new people quicky and is fine with visiting adults to the home. Baxter will need the time he is left alone building up gradually; he builds a strong bond with his family and likes consistency and routine. He is a sweet little lad who will need to process the change in environment and exposure to new places and new people gradually. He is housetrained and he travels well in the car.

About Baxter

What life with Baxter looks like

Baxter is a small senior shih tzu dog waiting at Dogs Trust Ilfracombe in Ilfracombe.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Baxter, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Baxter?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dogs Trust Ilfracombe handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Baxter on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Baxter if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dogs Trust Ilfracombe will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Baxter already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Baxter isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dogs Trust Ilfracombe early rather than rehoming privately; they know Baxter and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
