Bernard

Male · Adult · 6 years

Bernard is a really fun and playful boy and already knows his basic training, but being very foody he'll be great to teach more tricks to. He'll need his home to be calm and peaceful as he is vey sensitive to traffic, which also means he'll need to be walked in areas well away from traffic. He could be OK living with older, more sensible teenage kids but other pets would be too much for him to be able settle properly. Bernard is taking medication to help with his anxiety and our vet will discuss this in more detail with potential adopters. Add our wonderful Bernard to your favourites if you're able to make sure he's never left initially and you like fun, affectionate little dogs with lots of personality! Bernard is a very handsome 6yr old Dachshund Jack Russell Terrier Crossbreed. He is super friendly with everyone he meets! Sadly, Bernard is very scared of being on his own and cannot be left at all at the moment. He's living off-site with a foster carer for now who has told us he's wonderful company, house trained and been fine with anyone visiting the house, but he just can't be left alone. In his new home he'll need someone around all the time and it will be along process to gradually build him up to even a very short time alone, but we'll happily help and support with this training.

About Bernard

What life with Bernard looks like

Bernard is a adult dog waiting at Dogs Trust Leeds in Leeds.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Bernard, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Bernard?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dogs Trust Leeds handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Bernard on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Bernard if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dogs Trust Leeds will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Bernard already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Bernard isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dogs Trust Leeds early rather than rehoming privately; they know Bernard and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
