Berry originally came to us from a breeder in 2022 and was adopted into a home, but she has unfortunately been returned as she was still struggling to live with the resident dog. While she socialises well with other dogs when out and about, she is looking for a home where she can be the only dog, as she has shown resource guarding behaviours around high-value items such as food and treats within the home. When Berry arrived back here, she was a very worried little girl who preferred to keep her distance. Since then, Berry has made some lovely progress. Although she can still be a little nervous in new situations and with unfamiliar people, she has grown so much in confidence with the people she knows. She now actively seeks out fuss from her handler and, if they stop, she'll gently paw at them and even have a little cry to ask for more attention. In her previous home, Berry displayed resource guarding behaviours around both dogs and people. Around people, this can be managed by giving her a little space and swapping the item for something of higher value, rather than trying to take it away. Her guarding comes from insecurity and likely reflects a life where she never truly had anything of her own. Because of this, Berry is looking for an adult-only home with adopters who understand resource guarding, have ex-breeder experience and are committed to using kind, positive management techniques. We have been told that Berry is clean in the home, although she may need a few reminders while settling into a new routine. She walks nicely on the lead and doesn't pull, although she can be timid and easily startled, so she will benefit from gentle encouragement as she continues to gain confidence in the world around her. Despite her worries, Berry has so much love to give. She is simply looking for a calm, patient home where she can finally feel safe, build trusting relationships, and enjoy life at her own pace. With understanding, consistency, and plenty of kindness, Berry will blossom into a wonderfully loyal and loving companion. Berry is currently being treated for some dermatitis around her paw area as we as an ear infection.
