Bert

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 5 years

Bert is a dog for connoisseurs and lovers of character. He is inquisitive, agile, and enthusiastic about any shared activity—provided it takes place in his familiar world. As a typical herding dog mix, he is vigilant, impulsive, and shares his emotions loudly and clearly at all times. He is an active companion who loves mental stimulation but also needs help to find his calm. Bert came to us as a young pup from Smeura and was rehomed shortly thereafter. Unfortunately, he was returned to us after a few months due to overburdening his owners. Challenges & Training: Shadows and Light Bert carries his herding dog heritage proudly: He is vigilant, impulsive, and tends to want to control situations. His enthusiasm is both a blessing and a curse—he reacts sensitively to moods, can be easily swept away, but is also easily distracted. Bert lives in a world full of stimuli that often overwhelm him. Especially important: Bert needs security through consistency. He loves stable routines. Deviations from the usual routine or new, complex exercises stress him quickly, as it is difficult for him to find his own solutions spontaneously. In stressful moments, he shows startle responses and needs a confident leadership that helps him out of his restlessness. We are looking for dog-experienced people without children who can provide Bert with a stable framework. He needs someone who understands his sensitive, sometimes unstable side and helps him better process stimuli. Bert is not a dog for everyone, but a loyal companion for the right ones. Those who are willing to build his trust patiently will get a partner who goes through fire for his people. Send us an email with the fully completed interested party application form if you are interested in one of our animals, or contact us via our contact form with any questions. Please provide a callback number. Please do not come without an appointment!. This animal was surrendered to the shelter. This is a young, adolescent dog.

About Bert

What life with Bert looks like

Bert is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Oelzschau in Oelzschau.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Bert, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Bert?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Oelzschau handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Bert on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Bert if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Oelzschau will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Bert already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Bert isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Oelzschau early rather than rehoming privately; they know Bert and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
