Candy

Mixed Breed · Unknown

Candy is a charming Podenco Orito female, at three years old still young but having successfully navigated the cliffs of puppyhood and puberty. She is very friendly and playful and could easily apply for the stamp “Beginner’s Dog.” Now you’re probably wondering how such a dog ends up in an animal shelter. Most Podencos are hunting dogs with a history of hunger, mistreatment, and mistrust. In Candy’s case, that’s not the case. The lively bundle of energy had a loving home with an older couple who spoiled and cherished their little companion. Unfortunately, the man passed away recently, and the woman can no longer walk. Reluctantly, she gave Candy into the care of our friends in Linares, with the great hope that the delicate being with the sweet, and thus so fitting, name would soon get a second chance at life as a family dog. Candy takes her time in the animal shelter well, but she probably hasn’t understood that her Frauchen won’t be coming back to pick her up. So, the more important and beautiful it would be if the cheerful female dog could quickly leave the world of bars and concrete behind. Candy is a scruffy and witty Wuslon who equally appreciates long belly rubs as well as athletic walks and sunny afternoons in the garden. She knows life in the house and is capable of finding the most comfortable spot on the couch independently. Candy loves cookies and nice weather, balls, and all the people who know how to properly handle her toys. She is 45cm at the shoulder height, not a large dog, but too big to be overlooked, and too small to knock someone over – in short, Candy is a wonderful girl on the inside and out. Please don’t let the urban legends that surround the Podenco deter you from giving one of these wonderful mouse-eared puppies a chance.

DE·Show original

About Candy

What life with Candy looks like

Candy is a small adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Candy, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Candy?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Candy on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Candy if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Candy already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Candy isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Candy and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
