We often hear of cases of dogs that are rightly called "heroes" for the feats they are capable of performing. Exceptional dogs find people under avalanches, at sea, among rubble, identify survivors, search for missing persons, and literally save human lives. Many of these heroic dogs are animals that work side by side with humans in specific contexts and professions - law enforcement, rescue units, herding - where their sense of smell, their concentration and intelligence are extraordinary tools supporting a specific training they have followed since puppies. With this in mind, we want to ask: is a dog brave because it is induced by humans to behave in such a way, or can it also rush to help someone following pure instinct? This question was answered by a study conducted by some researchers from the University of Arizona, which showed that even companion dogs without any preparation can act with the will to protect members of their pack. The research was published in the online scientific journal Plos One in 2020 and showed that a third of a group consisting of 60 companion dogs older than 9 months - without specific rescue training - managed to "rescue" the friend who was asking for help. Indeed, one of the tests involved each dog's owner being locked inside a large box equipped with a closed door and calling for help in the presence of the animal. The result satisfied the research team, who stated that a good number of dogs - a third, indeed - succeeded in opening the door and freeing the person simply following a natural tendency. Another test were the other two conducted on companion dogs: when there was only food in the box, or the owner was locked inside but was calm, the dogs were calm, showing no signs of agitation or stress, which instead occurred when they heard the calls for help, moments during which they managed to open the door more times. Therefore, the conclusion drawn is that there seems to be an impulse that moves dogs to rescue their owners, without previous specific training, but rather through empathy and emotional contagion. A primitive impulse towards members of their own group that once again shows how close these precious and special animals are, sometimes silent and discreet, sometimes noisy and rowdy, but always keeping their eyes, ears, tails, and noses alert so that nothing bad happens to us.

Abbiamo spesso notizia di casi di cani che vengono definiti, a giusto titolo, “eroi”, per le imprese che sono in grado di compiere. Cani eccezionali ritrovano le persone sotto le valanghe, in mare, tra le macerie, individuano sopravvissuti, cercano chi è scomparso e letteralmente salvano le vite degli umani. Moltissimi di questi cani eroici sono animali che lavorano fianco a fianco insieme all’uomo in determinati contesti e mestieri – forze dell’ordine, unità di soccorso, pastorizia – dove il loro fiuto, la loro concentrazione e intelligenza sono straordinari strumenti a supporto di uno specifico addestramento che hanno seguito fin da cuccioli. A questo proposito, ci vogliamo chiedere: un cane è coraggioso perché è indotto dall’uomo a un comportamento tale o può lanciarsi in aiuto di qualcuno anche seguendo il puro istinto? A questa domanda ha risposto uno studio condotto da alcuni ricercatori dell’università dell’Arizona che ha dimostrato che anche i cani da compagnia che non hanno alcuna preparazione possono agire con la volontà di salvaguardare i membri del proprio branco. La ricerca è stata pubblicata sulla rivista scientifica online Plos One nel 2020 e ha mostrato come un terzo di un gruppo composto da 60 cani da compagnia di età superiore a 9 mesi – privi di specifico addestramento al salvataggio – è riuscito a “trarre in salvo” proprio l'amico che chiedeva aiuto. Uno dei test prevedeva infatti che il proprietario di ogni cane fosse chiuso dentro una grande scatola provvista di una porticina chiusa e che invocasse soccorso in presenza dell’animale. Il risultato ha soddisfatto il team dei ricercatori che ha dichiarato che un buon numero di cani – un terzo appunto – ha raggiunto lo scopo di aprire la porticina e liberare la persona semplicemente seguendo una tendenza naturale. Un’ulteriore prova sono stati gli altri due test effettuati sui cani da compagnia: quando nella scatola c’era soltanto del cibo oppure il proprietario vi era chiuso ma stava calmo, i cani si sono mostrati tranquilli, privi di segni di agitazione o di stress che invece presentavano ascoltando le richieste di aiuto, momenti nei quali sono riusciti anche a schiudere la porticina per un numero maggiore di volte. Quindi la conclusione che è stata tratta è che pare esistere un impulso che muove i cani in soccorso del proprietario e questo senza un precedente e particolare allenamento al rischio ma piuttosto per via empatica e per contagio emotivo. Uno slancio primitivo verso i membri del proprio gruppo che ancora una volta fa capire quanto vicini ci siano questi animali preziosi e speciali, presenze a volte silenziose e discrete, a volte chiassose e turbolente, ma che vigilano con occhi, orecchie, code e tartufi sempre all’erta affinché nulla di male ci possa accadere.
