Adopt Caramelo

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 7 years

Approx. 7.5 years (born approx. 01.10.2018), 40 cm, 9.5 kg, male, neutered. Leishmania test negative on 26.01.2026, will be tested again before travel arrangements. Still in the animal shelter in Spain. Caramelo is a loving and very affectionate dog, sometimes a bit nervous, who needs time to get used to new situations. When he came to our partner animal shelter, he initially needed a few weeks to relax and gain confidence. At first, it was thought that it might be difficult to put a collar on him, but surprisingly, he allowed this without any problems. At the leash, he is initially a bit eager and pulls, but calms down quickly once he is in the open field or in open areas, where he then runs normally and relaxed. Caramelo gets along well with non-dominant dogs, but is rather insecure with dominant animals. Unfortunately, he is not a fan of cats. His slight underbite is particularly charming, giving his face a unique and lovable expression. His background: Caramelo was given up by a family at our partner animal shelter. He previously lived with the older mother of the family on the farm, rather neglected and practically without contact with other animals. His future home: Caramelo is a dog with character, who despite his not so young age still needs mental stimulation, movement and activity. We don't see him in a household with children and ideally as a single dog, where he can have his primary caregiver all to himself. Videos May 26: (Caramelo was formerly named Toffee)

About Caramelo

What life with Caramelo looks like

Caramelo is a medium-sized adult mixed breed dog waiting at home4dogs in Home4dogs.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇨🇭Adopting from Switzerland

Swiss shelters require a home visit (Platzkontrolle) and proof of suitable accommodation. Cantons each have their own additional dog-keeping requirements (e.g. SKN training in some areas). Animals leave sterilized and chipped.

Frequently asked

Adopting Caramelo, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Caramelo?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. home4dogs handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Caramelo on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Caramelo if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — home4dogs will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Caramelo already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Caramelo isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with home4dogs early rather than rehoming privately; they know Caramelo and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
