David

Mixed Breed · Male

That a Podenco in Spain is waiting for a family to find him is not unusual at all – but our David is a unique and real stunner. The red-and-white charmer with his rarely all-white head is not only a beauty to look at, but he also captivates with his affectionate and friendly personality. David wandered onto the side of a busy highway in March, right at the end of the hunting season. When the one-year-old male dog (as of June 2024) reached a gas station, he decided that he could make a relatively safe home there. Fortunately, the staff were very animal-loving and did not call the dog catchers but our friends at ArcoNatura. David greeted the animal welfare workers amiably and confidently climbed into the car that brought him into the care of our partners. David quickly found his place among his four-legged roommates at the animal shelter. His playful but never rambunctious nature opens the hearts of the older dogs and the more timid ladies. Our tender charmer also knows how to transform a free run into an adventure playground and involve the working bipeds in the fun with stunts using buckets, rubber boots, or brushes. One could say that David ensures a balanced work-life balance – and he would be happy to do the same for his own family. Despite his wonderful appearance and great nature, David has only slim chances of leaving the animal shelter in the near future. Many people scroll past a Podenco because our elegant ear-furred dogs are often burdened with too many preconceptions. It is true that the Podenco is a lively hunting dog, and it can take a long time for a representative of this breed to be comfortable off-leash, but this is not a problem that only Podencos face (as it also depends on the individual dog’s character) and there are plenty of other ways to give the Podenco enough exercise. Dog sports, playing in the garden, running alongside a bike, jogging, and many other activities are excellent alternatives. On the pro side of the clever Spaniards, there are many points that are far more interesting. The Podenco is usually a very quiet and balanced companion in the house. He neither barks nor overprotects, he moves almost silently and enjoys cuddles above all. As capable working dogs, most also learn very quickly how to be alone without decorating the apartment or adding extra holes to the family’s shoes. If you are a fan of our ear-furred friends, if you like long walks, know how to play with a squeaky (okay, he can also be one-color) ball, have a talent for petting and cuddling, and also have a spot for a warm dog bed near the heater, then sign up with us, and we will tell you how David can soon storm into your heart and of course into your home.

DE·Show original

About David

What life with David looks like

David is a adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting David, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about David?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw David on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt David if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is David already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if David isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know David and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
