Dexter

German Shepherd · Unknown · Senior · 9 years

Dexter, an old friend, is looking for a new home. We would like to introduce you to Dexter. Dexter is a German Shepherd mix who has to live with us at the animal shelter again. But how did this happen? Dexter was seized by the veterinary office in 2020 and found his way to our shelter. Due to his difficult past, his chances of being adopted initially seemed low. But we didn't give up! In 2021, a loving couple contacted us who wanted to give Dexter a chance. He moved in with them - a real jackpot for our German Shepherd mix. Unfortunately, life did not go as planned: both owners passed away within a short time, and Dexter found himself alone again. In the meantime, he lived in the Bückeburg animal shelter and in a loving dog boarding kennel. Now he is back with us and is looking for a warm place to spend his twilight years. Here are some facts about Dexter: Breed: German Shepherd mix Birthdate: March 2010 (14 years old) Character: Strong-willed with a predisposition for guarding Hobbies: Ball games, water, and long walks Dexter is one of the classic herding dogs and needs clear boundaries and a meaningful task in everyday life. He is an older but intelligent and eager to learn dog who takes on any task assigned to him with joy and enthusiasm. Those who get along with him will gain a loyal and affectionate companion. Please note: Dexter has a food allergy and needs special food. We are looking for dog-experienced people who can offer him a loving home, or sponsors who would like to support us with the accommodation and food costs. If you are interested in Dexter or want to learn more about him, please don't hesitate to contact us!

About Dexter

What life with Dexter looks like

Dexter is a senior german shepherd dog waiting at Tierschutz Rodenberg / Bad Nenndorf und Umgegend e.V. in Germany.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Dogs and cats typically leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with an EU pet passport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Dexter, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Dexter?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutz Rodenberg / Bad Nenndorf und Umgegend e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Dexter on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Dexter if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutz Rodenberg / Bad Nenndorf und Umgegend e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Dexter already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Dexter isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutz Rodenberg / Bad Nenndorf und Umgegend e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Dexter and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
