Adopt Dona

German Shepherd · Unknown · Senior · 20 years

It probably feels like it does for us, and you're already heartbrokenly in love with Dona's first photos. Imagine how you'd feel if you had the originals in front of you. You'd look deeply into the eyes of this bear cub with the Zorro mask and playful eyebrows, hug it, and never want to let go. And that's pretty much exactly what the loving Dona wants, apart from of course fun walks, a well-fed bowl, a cozy dog bed, a corner on the sofa, and a whole lot of attention. And of course the promise that nothing in the world will ever tear them apart again! Dona came to the animal shelter ADPCA with her buddy Fanchito. She lived happily on a farm and led a rather free and independent life. Due to age, the owners could no longer take care of their animals, and so this carefree life has come to an end. The two now sit together in the yard and are very bored. We suspect that Dona is a mix of Border Collie and German Shepherd, so a very hardworking and people-oriented mix with a smart head and plenty of energy. Since Dona has led her life very freely in the open until now, she hasn't learned the dog ABC yet and needs to catch up with her new family by sitting at the school desk to make up for lost time. With her former owner, she often took long walks without a leash and was always calmly by her side. The potential in this magic mouse is probably already clear to you! In the right hands, Dona will become a model dream dog. However, it requires the right mix of loving guidance and consistency. Dona is not green behind the ears anymore but is still young enough to adapt to her new family life. Children should be old enough to handle the temperamental lady. A friendly dog buddy who enjoys playing together would be nice, but Dona will also fill your life as a solo princess – we promise! All kinds of dog sports are waiting to be tried together. Who knows what Dona and your talents are capable of… Living in a household is something she hasn't experienced yet, and at the beginning, some patience and perhaps a bit of humor are required. With loving guidance, Dona will learn this in no time and will be inseparable. © 2006-2024 by animal welfare association Europa e.V.

© 2006-2024 by Tierschutzverein Europa e.V. - All rights reserved

About Dona

What life with Dona looks like

Dona is a large senior german shepherd dog waiting at Tierschutzverein Europa in München.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Dona, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Dona?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein Europa handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Dona on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Dona if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein Europa will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Dona already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Dona isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein Europa early rather than rehoming privately; they know Dona and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
