Adopt Elma

Mixed Breed · Unknown

Homeless animals, dogs, can be seen everywhere in Romania. Because homeless dogs move around freely in the area and most of them are still unspayed, new homeless animal puppies are constantly being born. Often, mothers come to give birth in places that offer some shelter and food. One such place is a party location situated near the main road, next to Carpen shelter kennel. The vicinity of the place has safe hiding spots and with the parties there is a lot of trash and other edible items, so new mothers with their puppies can be found there as well. In the summer of 2021, three mothers with their puppies were staying in the yard of the party location at the same time. Since there were a total of 18 puppies, the owners of the location called Carmen, who takes care of Carpen's garden, for help. Therefore, Carmen spayed the mothers and brought the puppies to safety at her garden. Eino, Enni and Elma are part of that group of 18 puppies. They grew up as shelter kennel puppies into young adults, and therefore they are very unfamiliar with anything outside of the shelter. It is understandable that everything new and strange excites them. Strangers interest them a lot and after a short time of observing, they will come to eat treats from your hand. However, actual physical contact still excites them. With familiar people, they are more relaxed, but even then they do not approach to be touched. Elma is slightly more active than her sister, but less active than her brother Eino. They are not really shy and it is likely that with the help of a more outgoing dog friend, they would become more confident in a home or foster home rather quickly.

Romaniassa kodittomia koiria näkee kaikkialla. Koska kodittomat koirat liikkuvat alueilla vapaasti ja heistä suurin osa on edelleen leikkaamattomia, syntyy uusia kodittomia pentuja aivan jatkuvasti. Usein emot hakeutuvat synnyttämään pentunsa paikkoihin, joissa on edes jonkinlaista suojaa ja ravintoa tarjolla. Yksi tällaisista paikoista on Carpen tarhalle johtavan maantien varrella sijaitseva juhlapaikka.

About Elma

What life with Elma looks like

Elma is a adult mixed breed dog waiting at Embla Rescue in Helsinki.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇫🇮Adopting from Finland

Finnish shelters require a home visit and an adoption contract. Animals are vetted; the EU pet passport covers cross-border travel within the bloc.

Frequently asked

Adopting Elma, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Elma?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Embla Rescue handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Elma on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Elma if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Embla Rescue will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Elma already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Elma isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Embla Rescue early rather than rehoming privately; they know Elma and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (FI). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
