Gecko

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel · Male · Puppy · 11 months

Gecko is a super sweet, active and playful chap. He's a little worried of louder noises, so would prefer a quieter home where he can build his confidence at his own pace, but also where he can get all of the exercise and stimulation he needs. Gecko is fully house-trained and travels well in the car. He can pull a bit on lead when he's excited, but is very receptive to training and high value treats! We think any training will be a breeze. Gecko will need grooming every 6 weeks or so, and is quite avoidant of it. He will need some support around this, and making it into a positive thing, which we can help with! He's a beautiful boy that needs a family willing to put a bit of work into him, but will be a wonderful companion for a lucky family. Meet handsome boy, Gecko! Gecko is a sweet boy, who's had a bit of an unsettled start. At 10-months old, he is quite a sensitive lad and is looking for a special home. All members of the household will need to be older teenagers of adults, an any dogs in the home would need to be very tolerant and confident to show him the ways. He can be a bit intense with dogs, but he would definitely benefit from having social doggy friends. Gecko is looking for a family that are prepared to build trust around toys, and practise swaps for valued items. He would love experienced owners that are willing to read his body language and give him space when needed, as he can be conflicted with handling and protective over his resources. Gecko would need a home where there is someone home for most of the day, so he can settle in slowly and feel safer being left on his own. Gecko is a brilliant boy with tonnes of personality and a drive for adventure! He loves a paddle in a bit of water, an a sniffy wander. He needs plenty of mental and physical stimulation, enjoying opportunities to explore, dig and learn new things to keep his brain busy. Gecko is a sweet boy, who is very playful and clever. He needs a bit of time to build a real bond with someone, but can get a bit mouthy if over-aroused. He can sometimes be a bit conflicted over handling, and show some appeasement behaviours so adopters will need to be willing to offer him some space when he's asking for it.

About Gecko

What life with Gecko looks like

Gecko is a puppy/kitten cavalier king charles spaniel dog waiting at Dogs Trust Cardiff in Cardiff.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Gecko, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Gecko?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dogs Trust Cardiff handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Gecko on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Gecko if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dogs Trust Cardiff will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Gecko already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Gecko isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dogs Trust Cardiff early rather than rehoming privately; they know Gecko and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
