Githar

Rottweiler · Male · Adult · 6 years

The imposing Rottweiler originally came from Ukraine. He was kept in a Cologne refugee camp with several other dogs. Since Githar did not harmonize well with the other male dogs present, he came to us at the animal shelter. Githar is the typical young Rottweiler. He needs time in the beginning to get to know new people and also to accept them. Once a trust basis is established, the imposing male dog turns into a fighting cuddler. With his familiar people, he is particularly cuddly in his stormy way. If he feels things are getting too close or if he is confined too much, Githar would rather try to escape the situation. If he cannot do so, he lets out a typical Rotti-growl. At the animal shelter, he does not really find peace due to all the stress and is therefore often very tense. This is also reflected in his daily walks, which can be somewhat exhausting in the beginning. Once he has left the grounds behind, he seeks the closeness to his person and then finds such peace that he falls asleep with his head on the lap of his person. Environmental stimuli, especially those in motion, are very interesting for Githar. Mastering these situations still comes a bit harder for him. For Githar, we are looking for experienced dog owners who ideally are familiar with his breed. His first contact with other animals still comes a bit harder. Therefore, we see Githar more as a single dog, although a cohabitation with an existing only dog is not impossible. The deciding factor is primarily the sympathy between the dogs. In every respect, his new people should have the time and patience to get to know Githar and take some of the responsibility off his shoulders so that he can be the wonderful travel companion he wants to be. If you are interested in Githar, please feel free to write us a substantive email or call us.

About Githar

What life with Githar looks like

Githar is a adult rottweiler dog waiting at Kolner Tierschutzverein in Köln.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Githar, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Githar?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Kolner Tierschutzverein handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Githar on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Githar if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Kolner Tierschutzverein will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Githar already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Githar isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Kolner Tierschutzverein early rather than rehoming privately; they know Githar and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
