Habana &#8211

Mixed Breed · Female

When we talk about Shar Peis, we unfortunately also have to discuss puppy mills. The Shar Pei was once a sturdy, slender working dog, a true "nature boy," whose body structure and fur were perfectly adapted to the climatic conditions of its homeland, South China. But, as so often unfortunately, this perfectly designed dog was not perfect enough for humans. Breeders crossed Molossers to breed the breed wider and more aggressive, and so a very old dog breed was lost. Then there were attempts to breed the Shar Pei back to its original form (we know this today from the Pug and many bulldogs), but that didn't work. Instead, the proud, distinctive Asians found their way to the USA, and there, what was recognized as a mistake in China and something that would have been gladly undone became suddenly desirable. The wrinkles that the original dog only had as a puppy and which were supposed to merge into a small forehead fold and a neck fold in adulthood became a beauty mark – more wrinkles, more beauty. Habana is a young female Shar Pei – and she barely sees, as she already has a pronounced under-eye fold. A small operation that is due soon could help the friendly, one-and-a-half-year-old (as of August 2024) girl, but her owners found it too much of an effort or too expensive … No one knows for sure, because her owners lacked the courage to leave their female dog at our friends in Linares and explain to the animal protection workers why they no longer want Habana, but instead tied her to the gate of ArcoNatura in the night. Habana had to endure a long horror night like many others before her. She heard the other dogs, feared an attack at any moment, but was aware that she could not flee in an emergency. One can only imagine the fear a creature feels in such a situation. So much more grateful was Habana when our partners freed her. Now, the relaxed girl lives in the animal shelter and waits for dog-experienced people to fall in love with her. Shar Peis have their own character, and one must familiarize oneself with the breed before deciding on one of these Asians. Habana, however, could be described as a "beginner Shar Pei." Although our wrinkles queen is not very playful, she gets along well with other dogs and feels comfortable in the pack, even with the large group. She is clingy and enjoys all forms of affection and can even ask politely for treats. Health-wise, Habana has been much luckier than many of her fellow animals. She has none of the typical skin problems and has healthy kidneys, her eyes can be treated with a small intervention … it is sad to have to mention this as an exceptional feature in such a young dog. Habana would like to see more of the world when she finally can after her therapy. To do that, she needs reliable people by her side who will patiently and consistently meet the needs of the young female dog and show her that she is not a piece of furniture to be discarded when it is no longer needed. Habana is young and open to a career befitting her breed – and she looks forward to packing her bags soon to join her own family.

About Habana &#8211

What life with Habana &#8211 looks like

Habana &#8211 is a small adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Habana &#8211, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Habana &#8211?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Habana &#8211 on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Habana &#8211 if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Habana &#8211 already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Habana &#8211 isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Habana &#8211 and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
