Adopt Havanna

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 4 years

Name: Havanna Age: born 23.03.2022 Breed: Herdenschutzhund mix (likely with Mioritic ancestry) Gender: female, neutered: yes Weight: approx. 40 kg Compatible with dogs? Lives with us with a male dog Compatible with cats? Not known so far More outgoing or shy: Friendly with known people, wary with strangers Notes: Havanna used to be named Buschka and was rehomed as a puppy. She then lived in a house with a garden. However, when the family's living conditions changed, it became difficult because the space and garden were no longer available. Additionally, Havanna is nearly adult (herding dogs are late developers) and shows that she wants to protect her owners and also the apartment. Unfortunately, cohabitation no longer worked out. Havanna was underweight when she was handed over to us and is now being fed to achieve a good weight. At our shelter, Havanna is friendly with known people. With strangers, she is typically wary and tends to defend her people if she doesn't have a confident leader by her side. This person should be able to explain to her that she doesn't need to defend herself in a friendly but clear manner. We are now looking for a home for Havanna where she can stay permanently, with people she can rely on. People with herding dog experience would be particularly useful. Additionally, Havanna will not be rehomed to a densely populated residential area or the city. She needs a house and garden where her innate watchfulness is not a problem. This animal can be anxious in unfamiliar situations.

About Havanna

What life with Havanna looks like

Havanna is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Ludwigsburg in Ludwigsburg.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Havanna, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Havanna?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Ludwigsburg handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Havanna on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Havanna if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Ludwigsburg will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Havanna already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Havanna isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Ludwigsburg early rather than rehoming privately; they know Havanna and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
