Adopt Hotdog Harry

Dachshund · Male · Adult · 5 years

I am Hotdog Harry, a handsome dachshund of 5 years old. How did I end up here? My previous owner no longer wanted to take care of me and brought me somewhere as a "found dog". They brought me to DOA. At first, I didn't understand anything at all. Where had my owner gone? And all those new people around me... pretty exciting actually. Honestly, I really needed some time to get used to it. Everything was new and a little scary. But luckily, the people here were very kind to me. With soft voices and patience, they helped me feel safer. Slowly but surely, I started to be more myself. My tail began to wag, tentatively at first, but soon faster and faster when I saw them! I also discovered that playing is actually really fun. Especially with a ball or a frisbee, that makes me really happy! And I even let go nicely when you ask me! Going outside together, sniffing and walking, and maybe even meeting a dog friend on the playground... that's really enjoyable for me. The more attention and nice things we do together, the more I flourish. I am a tough dachshund, but deep down sometimes still a bit sensitive. New people and new places are still exciting at first. I just need some time to get used to it. But with a little patience (and secretly also a nice snack) you can quickly earn my trust.

Waar was mijn baasje gebleven? Eerlijk is eerlijk: ik moest echt even wennen.

About Hotdog Harry

What life with Hotdog Harry looks like

Hotdog Harry is a adult dachshund dog waiting at DOA Dierenasiel Amsterdam in Amsterdam.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇳🇱Adopting from Netherlands

Dutch shelters typically require a household assessment and an adoption contract. Animals are routinely sterilized, microchipped, and registered in the national pet database (NDG) before placement.

Frequently asked

Adopting Hotdog Harry, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Hotdog Harry?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. DOA Dierenasiel Amsterdam handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Hotdog Harry on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Hotdog Harry if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — DOA Dierenasiel Amsterdam will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Hotdog Harry already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Hotdog Harry isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with DOA Dierenasiel Amsterdam early rather than rehoming privately; they know Hotdog Harry and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
