Adopt Donna

Dachshund · Female · Young · 1 year

Hi… I'm a teckel dametje and I find the world sometimes a bit exciting. Maybe you know me already! That could be the case. After all, I've been on the DOA website before and had a lot of applications, but unfortunately, my best match wasn't there yet! So take my story seriously and who knows, you might be my new companion! There's a lot I still don't understand. Sounds like coughing or sneezing can suddenly make me jump. Then I look at you, as if to ask: "What was that again?" Everything is still new to me, and sometimes a bit overwhelming. After all, I haven't experienced much in my life. When I first arrived here, I didn't even know how to walk on a leash. But now I'm learning step by step, and I'm actually quite proud of that. But new things remain exciting. Putting on a harness or being leashed? Pooh… sometimes I just want to disappear. Or I make a silly jump, just because I don't know what to do with that tension. When it all gets too much, I run. Back and forth, along the edge, as if I'm trying to get the pressure off my body. This can happen on a playfield, but maybe also in a garden when I hear things I can't see. But… if you give me some time, something beautiful happens. Once the ice has cracked a little and I get to know you, I become your little friend. I really do. Then I come closer cautiously, and show you how much I really am. I'm looking for someone who is patient. Someone who doesn't push me, but helps me to discover the world calmly at my own pace. At my own pace. Because deep down, I really want to… I just need to learn that it's safe. Will you help me with that?

Wil jij me daarbij helpen?

About Donna

What life with Donna looks like

Donna is a young adult dachshund dog waiting at DOA Dierenasiel Amsterdam in Amsterdam.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇳🇱Adopting from Netherlands

Dutch shelters typically require a household assessment and an adoption contract. Animals are routinely sterilized, microchipped, and registered in the national pet database (NDG) before placement.

Frequently asked

Adopting Donna, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Donna?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. DOA Dierenasiel Amsterdam handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Donna on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Donna if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — DOA Dierenasiel Amsterdam will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Donna already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Donna isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with DOA Dierenasiel Amsterdam early rather than rehoming privately; they know Donna and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
