Absurd demands and avoidable mistakes. Few humans have the responsible awareness of their advanced age: usually, either victimistic attitudes or behaviors that recall an age they regret having passed. Instead, as with every stage of life, in old age it is important to adjust every aspect of existence to the reality of the present, perhaps with the awareness of its inevitable transience: in other words, everything one does or would like to do should be related to one's physical and mental health and well-being, and to one's life expectancy. Therefore, no puppies for the elderly, but dogs already in their later years, so that both can enjoy each other's presence and expectations; no large dogs, because the dog's energy must not be repressed and must be manageable by the elderly person; and, then, never, ever two, three, four animals together! This - and much more - is told in the animated video "Il cane e le persone anziane", which contains guidelines and information on a relationship that must be built with full awareness by the elderly person (or woman), as well as by the people who have affectionate or responsible ties with them, who will have to take care of the dog if it is left alone. In the relationship with the elderly person, the dog is a "relational partner" and therefore can never become "a tool" to alleviate loneliness: the doctors, geriatricians, veterinarians, and relatives who recommend that the elderly person take a puppy or a cat to care for without having full awareness of the animal's needs, wants, and rights commit a serious mistake. And if it is true that the benefits of a pet's presence on the mood and health of the elderly are a fact, it is equally true that if the family stops monitoring and overseeing the coexistence, the risks for the animal increase: it is not uncommon, indeed, that the elderly person engages in behaviors that can quickly lead to abuse, ranging from obesity or malnutrition or lack of physical activity, to untreated illnesses and forms of violence that can never be tolerated!

Assurde pretese ed errori evitabili Pochi umani hanno la responsabile coscienza della propria età avanzata: in genere, prevalgono o atteggiamenti vittimistici oppure comportamenti che ricordano età di cui si rimpiange il trascorso. Invece, come per ogni tempo della vita, anche nell'età anziana sarebbe importante adeguare ogni aspetto dell'esistenza alla realtà del presente, magari con la consapevolezza della sua ineluttabile fugacità: in altri termini, tutto ciò che si fa o si vorrebbe fare dovrebbe essere rapportato al proprio stato di salute e benessere (fisici e mentali) e all'aspettativa di vita. Quindi, niente cuccioli per gli anziani, ma cani già in là con gli anni, in modo che entrambi possano godere della presenza e delle aspettative dell'altro; niente cani di taglia grande, perchè l'energia non deve essere repressa nel cane ed essere gestibile dall'anziano; e, poi, mai e poi mai due, tre, quattro animali insieme! Questo – e molto altro – è raccontato nel video animato “Il cane e le persone anziane” , che contiene indicazioni e informazioni su un rapporto che deve essere costruito con piena consapevolezza sia da parte dell'anziano (o dell'anziana), sia da parte delle persone che con lui (o lei) hanno legami di affetto o di responsabilità e alle quali spetterà prendersi cura del cane nel caso rimanga da solo. Nel rapporto con la persona anziana il cane è un “partner di relazione” e, perciò, non può mai diventare uno “strumento” per alleviare la solitudine: commettono un gravissimo errore i medici di base, i geriatri, i veterinari e i famigliari che consigliano all'anziano di prendere un cucciolo di cane o un gatto a cui badare senza avere piena coscienza delle esigenze, dei bisogni e dei diritti dell'animale. E se è vero che i benefici della presenza di un animale domestico sull'umore e sulla salute dell'anziano sono un dato di fatto, è altrettanto vero che se la famiglia smette di sorvegliare e monitorare la coesistenza, i rischi per l'animale aumentano: non è così raro, infatti, che l'anziano ponga in essere comportamenti che possono sfociare rapidamente nel maltrattemento, passando per l'obesità o la malnutrizione o l'inattività motoria, fino alle malattie non curate e a forme di violenza che mai possono essere tollerate!
