Jack

Mixed Breed · Male

That Jack could move into the boarding facility of our friends from Dolmen Animal is a wonderful proof that the collaboration of our partner associations with the support of donors in Germany works excellently, because actually the small animal shelter had no resources left to take in another dog in need of treatment. Jack appeared one day at the door of a doctor's house. The male dog, at most one year old (as of 09/2022), was in a very pitiful condition, dehydrated, underweight, and covered in fleas. The staff at the doctor's house felt pity for the poor puppy and fed him for a few days. When it became clear that Jack came back every day and no one was taking care of him, they informed the animal welfare workers, who brought the helpless young dog to the safe custody of Dolmen Animal. Jack had probably been on the streets for some time, because although he quickly understood that the people at the animal shelter meant well, he still shows fear and avoids quick movements. At first, the thoroughly friendly but reserved Podenco-mixed breed could only be touched very hesitantly, but now he comes to you on his own if someone has enough time to sit quietly next to him and let him take the first step. Jack is a young dog, but he has already had much life experience. What he needs most is people who can give him the joy of life that a dog of his age should have. Instead of pulling away from hands, Jack should nudge them with his nose and ask for cookies, instead of being startled by the sound of a bouncing ball, he should chase the toy and run wildly across meadows and fields. In the animal shelter it is difficult to achieve this development, but our partners see every day that it is possible, because Jack is highly motivated to learn all the things that are fun and to forget his past. Jack needs a understanding, patient family that lives in a house that provides a shy dog with the necessary retreats just as much as a colorful squeaky ball and the opportunity to cuddle with his two-legged companions in the evening while watching TV - and we are sure that right now the right person is reading Jack's advertisement and will soon get in touch with our adoption officers ...

DE·Show original

About Jack

What life with Jack looks like

Jack is a small adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Jack, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Jack?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Jack on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Jack if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Jack already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Jack isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Jack and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
