Johnny

Mixed Breed · Male

Johnny is a four-year-old Shar Pei in beautiful chocolate color, who finally got to rest after a tough time in the animal shelter of Mastines en la calle. At first, the sensitive wrinkled dog was very mistrustful and anxious – understandable, given his extreme poor living conditions. Despite everything he endured, he never showed aggression, which is noteworthy for a male dog of his breed. In the year he has lived in the animal shelter, Johnny has learned incredibly much and shows every day how much is in him. Today, he is noticeably more relaxed and very people-oriented: When he has gained trust, he seeks proximity, enjoys being petted, and can cuddle with great devotion. He needs people who do not pressure him but give him time to open up at his own pace – then, Johnny will generously share his golden heart. Johnny had, like one in five Shar Peis bred according to today’s breed standards, a pronounced entropion. This condition causes the eyelids to roll inward, constantly rubbing the lashes against the eyeball – which is painful, can cause inflammation, and impair vision. Johnny has already undergone surgery, and everything healed very well, and currently, he is doing great with it. In everyday life, he has made great progress: Johnny accepts harnesses and leashes, enjoys walking, and enjoys walks. Outdoors, he shows interest and learns to manage new situations calmly – with clear guidance, it works really well. Our friendly Asian is social and can get along with other dogs but does not need constant four-legged company. Shar Peis are often more independent, quiet observers who highly value their primary caregiver(s) but can be reserved with strangers. Just like Johnny: not a “everybody’s-my-best-friend” dog, but a refined fellow who loves clear communication, reliability, and respectful handling. With a suitable canine companion, he is likely to be absolutely happy – but a turbulent multi-dog household would not necessarily be right for him. For Johnny, we wish for a quiet, loving home with people who have hearts, patience, and ideally, an understanding of the Shar Pei breed. People who accept him as he is, take his signals seriously, and give him security. Then, Johnny will be a faithful companion – sensitive, clingy, and proud of his unique Shar Pei way.

DE·Show original

About Johnny

What life with Johnny looks like

Johnny is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Johnny, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Johnny?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Johnny on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Johnny if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Johnny already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Johnny isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Johnny and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
