Ken

Mixed Breed · Male · Young · 3 years

I-No.: w-korfu-ken-m-0923 Update October 2025: Ken - actually, he is a bit of an emergency case. Ken came to the shelter with his mother Kelly and his brother Key in 2023. Key quickly found a home. Mama Kelly, a rather shy and very loving dog, also made the leap from the shelter via a foster home to her new home. Only Ken is still in the shelter, and it has been over 2 years now. Ken is a scaredy-cat and hides this behind a loud bark. He barks loudly at strangers, but once he knows someone, he enjoys cuddles and treats. We are sure that if he has a home and explores the world step by step with his people, Ken will be a treasure. Today, he went for a walk alone with a volunteer and without the company of other dogs, and it went quite well (see video). Update June 2025: Ken now really enjoys going for walks with an animal shelter staff member. She practices diligently with him, and Ken masters it mostly very well (see video from March 2025). During a group walk with several dogs, Ken even overcame his shyness and wanted to be petted by volunteers, whom he previously found scary. Update mid-March 2024: Ken currently weighs 15.6 kg - it would be so nice if he finally got a chance with loving people! Update January 2024: Ken has developed wonderfully - see the video from January 2024! With the shelter staff, Ken no longer shows any shyness and loves to cuddle - what a great development :) He also takes treats from people he doesn't see often. He seems very happy and loves toys - he can play with them for hours. Ken is currently about 55 cm tall. Update end of October 2023: Ken is still shy around people, but he is very friendly and playful with other dogs. He is currently about 40-45 cm tall. September 2023: Key & Ken are the two puppies of Mama Kelly. The little family was thrown over the shelter gate. Understandably, all three are still very reserved but are making steady progress. Recently, Key and Ken moved from the quarantine station to the outdoor enclosure with the cheerful Sheila, and they are slowly coming out of their shells :-) All dogs are vaccinated, microchipped, and have an EU pet passport.

About Ken

What life with Ken looks like

Ken is a large young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierhilfe Korfu e.V. in Ratingen.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Ken, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Ken?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierhilfe Korfu e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Ken on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Ken if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierhilfe Korfu e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Ken already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Ken isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierhilfe Korfu e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Ken and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
