Kiba

Mixed Breed · Female · Puppy · 4 months

When a visitor of Dolmen Animal meets our German Shepherd lady Kiba, they will probably think she looks quite pitiful – and not at all like a four-year-old dog. However, when the animal welfare workers of Dolmen stroke Kiba and plant a big kiss on her cheeky nose, they know that it is a miracle that this friendly female dog is even alive and enjoying her days so happily and cuddly. Kiba came into the care of our partner because a relative of Kiba's owner informed the animal welfare workers that his relative had two completely neglected German Shepherds. When our friends went to the man's house to save the animals, Kiba's partner was already dead, and his remains lay with the sad female dog in the kennel. Kiba now weighs a healthy 45kg – when she was freed from her owner's hands, the poor girl weighed only 17kg. The veterinarian who examined Kiba on the day of her admission was shocked by the overall condition of the dog, but ultimately at least relieved by her initial blood tests. While Kiba (as expected) tested positive for heartworms – and was immediately treated – the rapid tests for leishmaniasis, ehrlichiosis, and anaplasmosis were negative. No one had expected this, because at the time of the first examination, Kiba was almost naked, and since she did not have scabies, they at least suspected a massive leishmaniasis manifestation. But no, it was the worm larvae in the skin, the flea nests, the open wounds that led to Kiba's terrible coat condition, which has since improved fantastically. Yes, Kiba does still look somewhat worn, but her fur is growing back, her eyes are shining, the friendly four-year-old (as of August 2022) enjoys every day, loves to cuddle, and has discovered the joy of playing. Kiba gets along well with other confident dogs, but she doesn't like puppies – probably because they are too unpredictable and energetic for her. Because of this, we also think that Kiba would be better off in a new home without small children, the offspring should be able to understand that a dog with a history like Kiba needs space, lots of security, and even more patience. If you are a German Shepherd fan, if you believe you can explain the world to Kiba and show her how great it can be to be a beloved pet, far away from her past as a forgotten kennel inmate, close to starvation and dehydration, then please contact us quickly. Kiba is happy every day, but how much nicer would it be if this wounded being could soon learn what it's like to have a real home?

About Kiba

What life with Kiba looks like

Kiba is a small puppy/kitten mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Kiba, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Kiba?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Kiba on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Kiba if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Kiba already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Kiba isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Kiba and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
