Kiko

Poodle · Male · Young · 2 years

Kiko - sensitive male dog with disability seeks understanding people. Gender: male, neutered. Breed: Miniature Poodle mix. Country of origin (current location): Switzerland. Breeding country (birthplace): Bulgaria. Kiko recently traveled from Bulgaria to Switzerland. In Bulgaria, he was found severely neglected and completely matted on the street. Additionally, his right hind leg was broken twice up to the hip. The leg was not operable and would have been amputated. However, it was quickly discovered that he occasionally actively loads the leg, so it was not performed. Physiotherapy is now being used to strengthen the muscles as much as possible, so that someday hopefully a full load is possible. Kiko is a sweet little dog who is a bit reserved in new situations. He probably never knew much and must first discover everything in peace. He sometimes reacts a bit startled and insecure to quick or sudden movements. The better he gets to know us, the more confident he becomes in dealing with us. He is always warming up and showing more of his great character. If he can overcome himself, he likes to be with people and even plays with his plush toys. He still doesn't know the dog alphabet and therefore wants to go to dog school with his new people. He is a clever dog and must also be mentally well-utilized. He still doesn't know how to walk on a leash and is just slowly learning it. With his broken leg, he gets along well and doesn't let himself be stopped. However, since he usually walks on 3 legs, his endurance is not as pronounced as in other dogs. The healthy hind leg should therefore increase in muscle mass so that Kiko can romp around carefree like the others. We are looking for understanding people who are not deterred by his disability and are open to finding out with Kiko how his further path will develop. Kiko will also need to be supported with adapted physiotherapy in the future, which incurs costs and time. Whoever is not deterred by this and would like to give the little dog a loving home, is welcome to send us the application form. Please read the following leaflet carefully first to familiarize yourself with the needs of the respective animal species. If interested, fill out the application form and send it to . Important: Please only apply if you are ready for an adoption soon, i.e. not if you have holidays, a move or the like pending. We want to prevent our protégés from having to stay in the animal shelter longer than necessary. Please understand that we will not consider or answer applications without a form or those that do not meet our criteria.

About Kiko

What life with Kiko looks like

Kiko is a small young adult poodle dog waiting at Tierheim Tierpension Strubeli in Switzerland.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇨🇭Adopting from Switzerland

Swiss shelters require a home visit (Platzkontrolle) and proof of suitable accommodation. Cantons each have their own additional dog-keeping requirements (e.g. SKN training in some areas). Animals leave sterilized and chipped.

Frequently asked

Adopting Kiko, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Kiko?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Tierpension Strubeli handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Kiko on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Kiko if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Tierpension Strubeli will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Kiko already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Kiko isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Tierpension Strubeli early rather than rehoming privately; they know Kiko and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
