Kioto

Belgian Malinois · Male · Young · 2 years

Hund von Los Barrios Kioto came to the shelter in November 2024 at about eleven months old. The young Belgian Shepherd mix was likely abandoned and found himself suddenly in a loud, confusing environment. Initially, he struggled to adjust. The noise, confinement, and stress of the shelter overwhelmed him, so he often retreated into his kennel. Over time, with patience and regular contact, Kioto began to trust people. Gradually, his true character emerged: a sweet, affectionate, playful young dog who enjoys walks and makes the most of every moment outside his kennel. In the exercise yard, he has shown that he gets along well with both males and females. Despite all his progress, Kioto is still waiting for his chance. Most days, he spends more than 23 hours in a small kennel. The cold, damp, stressful environment is not where a young dog should grow up or develop. Often, you see him quietly lying on his bed just waiting. Foster update - January 2026: Due to persistent heavy rainfall and the risk of flooding, all dogs had to be evacuated. Kioto was temporarily moved to a foster home, where he settled in well after a short adjustment period. He showed himself to be affectionate, social, and outgoing. After getting enough exercise, he could relax wonderfully at home. Even on walks, he did very well and proved to be an agreeable and uncomplicated young dog in everyday life. Unfortunately, the foster family couldn't keep him permanently, so Kioto had to return to the shelter. Currently, Kioto lives again in his kennel, which he now shares with Kayla. The two get along excellently - they understand each other perfectly, play together and also relax quietly side by side. As soon as Kioto goes for a walk or into the exercise yard, he really comes alive. His tail starts wagging, his eyes shine, and you see the loving and playful dog that's really in him. Kioto is more than ready for a real home - a place where he can feel safe, move freely, gain more confidence, and finally leave the life in the kennel behind. He has already shown how much potential is in him. All he lacks now is a person who will finally give him the chance he's been waiting for far too long. Placement event - May 2026: In April 2026, Kioto participated in a placement event with his best friend Kayla. He did it superbly - as if he had experienced something like this many times before. Despite the big commotion with numerous visitors, music, children playing and food stalls, he remained calm and composed throughout his time in the enclosure. He took everything completely relaxed. He especially enjoyed the attention of the volunteer who looked after him and Kayla that day. He received countless belly rubs - both from the helper and from many visitors who came to his enclosure to get to know him. In exceptional cases, he was friendly, even when interacting with children. Kioto also mastered the car ride without any problems. He jumped into the car quite naturally, sat down calmly and looked relaxed out of the window.

About Kioto

What life with Kioto looks like

Kioto is a young adult belgian malinois dog waiting at Melampo in Melampo.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇨🇭Adopting from Switzerland

Swiss shelters require a home visit (Platzkontrolle) and proof of suitable accommodation. Cantons each have their own additional dog-keeping requirements (e.g. SKN training in some areas). Animals leave sterilized and chipped.

Frequently asked

Adopting Kioto, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Kioto?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Melampo handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Kioto on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Kioto if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Melampo will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Kioto already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Kioto isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Melampo early rather than rehoming privately; they know Kioto and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
