Kona has had an awful start to life. He is originally from Romania where he was taken from a home where it was extremely overcrowded with dogs. Food was almost none existent and Kona was absolutely emaciated. He had cuts off over his body from where there had clearly been some fights over the tiny amounts of food that were available. Unfortunately, in these situations if you don't do what is needed to eat, then you don't survive. Kona very nearly didn't. Once in the public shelter, Kona was completely overwhelmed. It was so loud with so many dogs and he didn't understand what was happening. Food was much more readily available here but Kona had never experienced this and the only thing that was inbuilt into him was to defend his food. For his own safety, Kona was placed into a crate which is were he lived for several months. It was absolutely heartbreaking to see him stuck in such a small space 24/7 but also necessary to keep him protected. If he was so tell a dog off in such an overcrowded shelter, his life would be at risk at all of the dogs would join in, in retaliation. Kona isn't a bad boy, he's just learnt to defend his food from other dogs as a way of survival. He has shown absolutely no signs of guarding towards humans. Kona does have some dogs friends at the rescue which he likes to spend his time with but we are very careful to never bring food / treats into the equation. Kona is not cat tested - with his food guarding issues towards other dogs, we are unsure yet whether we will cat test him Kona shows moderate energy levels at the rescue however he is slightly chunky at the moment and so this could increase over time Kona has never lived in a home before and so any time left alone would need to be slowly built up over time. Kona absolutely loves his walks once he has built trust with you Kona doesn't currently have any kind of basic training. He is clean in his kennel but we can't guarantee that there won't be toileting accidents in the home whilst he settles in
