Kurt

English Bulldog · Male · Adult · 5 years

Kurt came to us as a last resort from an animal shelter. He was left in a very poor general condition in the former owner's apartment. In the first few days with us, Kurt was completely overwhelmed by the shelter situation. He withdrew almost completely and wanted nothing to do with anyone. Only gradually did the insecure male dog seek contact with a few people. Then he quickly realized how wonderful contact with people can be and his first joyous outbursts became apparent. Now he demands cuddles by also snuggling into his people sometimes. When it comes to something he doesn't know or doesn't want, he seeks to retreat to the back. If he were to be confined too closely, Kurt would also snap. This behavior is particularly noticeable when on a leash. During his daily walks, one could assume from his behavior that Kurt hasn't been out much. When environmental stimuli became too much, he tried to run away with all his might. Now he can already walk more confidently, but still tries to orient himself by walls or bushes and walks as if on hot coals. Kurt tries to avoid contact with other animals and would clearly show his desire for distance if he feels the need. For Kurt, we are looking for people who have experience with insecure or anxious dogs. Additionally, one should have the necessary patience and time to spend with Kurt during his initial period. Adequate space to retreat to when overwhelmed would be ideal. Other animals or children should not be in the household. If you are interested in Kurt, please feel free to write us a substantive email or call us.

About Kurt

What life with Kurt looks like

Kurt is a adult english bulldog dog waiting at Kolner Tierschutzverein in Köln.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Kurt, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Kurt?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Kolner Tierschutzverein handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Kurt on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Kurt if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Kolner Tierschutzverein will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Kurt already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Kurt isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Kolner Tierschutzverein early rather than rehoming privately; they know Kurt and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
