Adopt Leo

Mixed Breed · Male · Senior · 9 years

Leo was dropped off with us because his owner sadly passed away, and no relatives were found to take him in. Generally, Leo is a real gem: a playful, well-mannered, and humorous male dog who loves going for walks and is usually very uncomplicated in dealing with people. When it comes to interacting with humans, Leo shows a clear preference for women. After a short getting-to-know-you phase, he quickly builds trust with them. With men, he is initially more reserved but eventually warms up over time. In the new home, one should still expect that Leo may initially react cautiously to unfamiliar visitors. At the beginning, temporarily muzzling him could be sensible, as he likes to stake out his territory. In unfamiliar or threatening situations, Leo can also snap. With our male trainee in the team, Leo no longer has any problems, showing that he adjusts well to new trusted people with reliable and calm handling. Leo gets along with fellow animals based on mutual liking, regardless of gender. What is important for him is a character-matched counterpart. In principle, he would prefer a role as a single prince in the new home; however, after a gentle getting-to-know-you phase, we can also envision a cohabitation with an already existing dog. At the animal shelter, he sometimes runs together with other dogs on the field. Leo is not compatible with unneutered male dogs or cats. He is also not suitable for a home with young children. Health-wise: Leo is Hepatozoon-positive. This infection is lifelong detectable but can flare up intermittently, especially under stress or with a weakened immune system, without causing permanent illness. For future examinations: before any possible Carbesia treatment, a blood smear for gamonts should be performed. Depending on the results, the attending veterinary practice will decide whether a Carbesia injection is necessary. Leo is looking for a loving home – preferably on a foster home that would like to accompany him on his journey. We are of course standing by to support. This animal was surrendered to the shelter.

About Leo

What life with Leo looks like

Leo is a senior mixed breed dog waiting at BMT Tierheim Arche Noah Stuhr in Germany.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Leo, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Leo?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. BMT Tierheim Arche Noah Stuhr handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Leo on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Leo if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — BMT Tierheim Arche Noah Stuhr will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Leo already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Leo isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with BMT Tierheim Arche Noah Stuhr early rather than rehoming privately; they know Leo and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
