Lilly is a very special case. We have rarely encountered a dog as deeply frightened as she was when she came to us. Lilly had been bullied and bitten within her free-roaming pack. She was severely underweight and suffered from a serious injury to her tail, which unfortunately had to be amputated. Because of her extreme fear, Lilly could only be rescued with the help of a mild sedative, administered under veterinary supervision. From the very beginning, she was highly distrustful. It took weeks before she dared to come close to us, and for a long time she would only accept treats from a safe distance, with the fence between us and her. Now, after almost two years in our care, Lilly is slowly beginning to truly trust us. She allows herself to be petted — even by unfamiliar people — and clearly enjoys having visitors around. Still, she remains very cautious. She only allows touch when she can see a person’s hands at all times. Her head, ears, and neck may be gently scratched, but never her back. If she feels she is losing control of a situation, she immediately chooses to run away. Lilly urgently needs someone who can spend a great deal of time with her, helping her feel safe enough to finally let go of her constant vigilance. She never reacts with aggression when she feels threatened — she always chooses flight. Interestingly, Lilly shows no fear or insecurity at all toward the other dogs in her pack. In fact, she is the leader. She fulfills this role beautifully, calmly keeping an eye on everyone and stepping in only when necessary. Even then, she is never aggressive — just clear, firm, and effective. Under Lilly’s leadership, seven dogs live together peacefully and harmoniously.
