Mickey

Male · Adult · 5 years

Mickey – Rotherham, South Yorks 5 years old Male, chocolate dapple smooth tweenie (7kg) Not neutered Adoption fee £350 Mickey came into our care under the saddest of circumstances – he had been kept in hoarding conditions for his entire life and never experienced the world outside. He is now safe and putting on weight and it is time for him to find his forever home. Mickey needs a very special home, with a family who can see his potential, who can be calm and patient and who can move at his pace. He needs someone who understands that his undesirable behaviour comes from fear, not aggression or being a bad dog. He needs someone who can slowly open up his world so he can learn how to be a dog and trust people. At the moment, when he feels frightened or overwhelmed, he protects himself by growling and snapping – he is not being bad; he is simply terrified. Mickey has now been in kennels for two months and is slowly making progress. It has been a good stepping-stone into a normal life and we feel he is now ready to move. His new family will ideally be experienced with rescues, patient and willing to go right back to basics. He needs a quiet home where he will never be rushed or forced, and where his boundaries will be respected. You won’t be alone – all behavioural support will be provided by The Red Foundation. About Mickey

What life with Mickey looks like

Mickey is a adult dog waiting at The Red Foundation in Pentlow Street.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Mickey, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Mickey?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. The Red Foundation handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Mickey on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Mickey if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — The Red Foundation will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Mickey already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Mickey isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with The Red Foundation early rather than rehoming privately; they know Mickey and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
