Mickey

Male

Mickey – Rotherham 5years Male, Chocolate Dapple Piebald Smooth Coat Miniature (8.8kg) Not Neutered Adoption fee £350 Imagine spending the first five years of your life entirely behind closed doors, never getting to experience the smells of the world, the feeling of grass beneath your paws, or knowing what a walk is. That is the reality for Mickey, a beautiful boy who came into our care when his owner entered end-of-life care. Because he had never once left his home, Mickey missed out on learning how to navigate the big wide world. He didn’t even know what a lead was, and today, the sight of one still terrifies him. Leaving the only world he ever knew was deeply distressing for Mickey, and his journey into our reality has been incredibly hard. When he feels frightened or overwhelmed, he protects himself by growling and snapping. He is not being bad; he is simply terrified. Our hearts break for him because he was never given a fair start, but we know that underneath that fear is a dog with so much potential, just waiting for the right person to show him he is safe. Mickey desperately needs an experienced, exceptionally patient owner who is willing to go right back to basics. He needs a quiet home where he will never be rushed or forced, and where his boundaries will be deeply respected. You won’t be alone though as all behavioural support needed will be provided by The Red Foundation. We have found that Mickey takes immense comfort in the company of other dogs, drawing confidence from them when the world feels too big. Because of this, he must go to a home with a friendly resident dog to help him feel secure and show him how to just be a dog. Mickey has so much love to give once he learns to trust. About Mickey

What life with Mickey looks like

Mickey is a large adult dog waiting at The Red Foundation in Pentlow Street.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Mickey, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Mickey?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. The Red Foundation handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Mickey on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Mickey if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — The Red Foundation will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Mickey already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Mickey isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with The Red Foundation early rather than rehoming privately; they know Mickey and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
