Origin Country: Hungary Mirko, a handsome stray, wandered the streets of Nagykörös fearfully and cautiously. Capturing him wasn’t easy, given his anxious and careful nature. But with the experience of the shelter staff and (unfortunately) a trap, Mirko was finally caught on July 24, 2024, and brought to Menhely. He was full of panic, a broken dog, and his fear was written all over his face. How could he know that they meant him no harm... Thankfully, Mirko has calmed down a bit in the meantime. At Menhely, he waits shyly but hopefully “behind bars” for his people, whom he can show what’s in him. Our fingers are crossed! Mirko was initially overwhelmed by his new situation and retreated completely into his doghouse. However, he has made small progress, but he is still shy and unsure. Slowly, he is gaining trust in the caretakers, but it still isn’t easy for him; he must have made some unpleasant experiences in his life. In essence, he is a loving and friendly four-legged friend who can also enjoy cuddles, something he likely didn’t know before and who desperately wishes to be safe. He needs loving people who can give him guidance, courage, and peace and lead him step by step into his new life. Of course, Mirko still needs to learn the dog ABCs, and his new two-legged family should then lovingly teach him everything at the right time. The fact that he can now walk on a leash well shows that he is absolutely learnable and ready to accept new things. Unfortunately, it became clear that Mirko is not suited for group life at the animal shelter and he had to move into a single kennel. He would rather be a solitary prince and doesn’t need other dogs. For him, however, people are warm and intimate, he needs a lot of love and closeness, and he begs for it. For our sensitive Mirko, the sun should finally shine! He has missed so much in his life. We are looking for loving and patient people with experience with insecure dogs who, for now, don’t have any expectations of Mirko but give him the time he needs to settle in. Understanding people who can show him what it feels like to have a home of his own, who give him a lot of love and security, and who love him as he is. Mirko will surely soon realize that he can trust his people and enjoy a happy and worry-free life. On September 25, 2024, a voluntary, Hungarian helper wrote: "Mirko came into the care of the animal shelter at the end of July 24. Today was the first time we had the opportunity to get to know him at a mentor day. His mentor took him on an exciting walk. Mirko is very people-oriented. He is extremely cuddly and likes to be stroked and pampered. At the beginning, he barely wanted to walk, he just hugged his mentor’s legs and didn’t want to let go, so much did he enjoy being with him. He is a heartwarming, friendly, loving dog. He walked nicely on the leash, at first a bit hesitant because he was excited, but then he increased his pace. He was attentive to his handler and wanted to please him. Mirko is waiting for his new, caring owner and a safe home where he will be a permanent part of the family. He needs love, plenty of movement, and structured training. He wants to have as many beautiful experiences as possible with his family, with regular daily walks and playful activities. Of course, he needs patience during the adjustment period. All the best, good Mirko!" On July 14, 2025, a voluntary, Hungarian helper wrote: "Mirko came to the animal shelter at the end of July 2024. Since then, he has been allowed to go out regularly on mentor walks—these moments are small bright spots for him, in which he can show his gratitude and affection. His mentor describes him as a calm, friendly, and loving dog. It is a pleasure to walk with him. He enjoys every minute, loves cuddles, and also likes to have his fur groomed. When you sit next to him, he snuggles up to you and hugs his person—this says everything about his big heart. When meeting other dogs, he reacts attentively but doesn’t bark. Mirko currently lives alone in his kennel at the animal shelter." Update: Mirko had two teeth extracted. July 25, 2025 Update: Mirko has started a socialization training, and dog interactions are being practiced with him. Who has a heart for Mirko? Mirko is ready for travel. Ursprungsland: Ungarn Der hübsche Mirko irrte herrenlos durch die Strassen von Nagykörös. Da Mirko ängstlich und vorsichtig war, war das Einfangen nicht ganz einfach. Aber mit der Erfahrung der Tierheimmitarbeiter und (leider) der Fangstange gelang es schliesslich doch noch und Mirko konnte am 24.7.2024 ins Menhely gebracht werden. Er war voller Panik, ein gebrochener Hund und die Angst stand ihm ins Gesicht geschrieben. Woher sollte er wissen, dass man ihm nichts Böses wollte....Dieser Textanfang wurde im Juli 2024 geschrieben, eine lange Zeit ist vergangen, wertvolle Lebenszeit. Nun ist er traurigerweise bereits einer der vielen Langzeitinsassen im Menhely und es sieht so aus, als ob das Tierheim für Mirko sein „ Für immer Zuhause“ bleiben wird. Das stimmt uns sehr nachdenklich und traurig, denn Mirko wurde immer übersehen, er hatte noch nie eine Anfrage. Dabei hat er sich so wunderbar entwickelt und hat das weltbeste Zuhause mehr als verdient. Wir geben die Hoffnung nicht auf! Mirko war zu seiner Anfangszeit im Tierheim überfordert, was total verständlich ist, denn Tierheim bedeutet Lärm, Stress, Hektik und viele andere Hunde. Daran muss man sich erst gewöhnen, so gut es eben geht. Und Mirko hat tatsächlich das Beste aus seiner neuen Lebenssituation gemacht und sich zu einem richtigen Sonnenschein entwickelt. Er liebt uns Menschen, holt sich immer Streicheleinheiten ab und geniesst es, wenn er Zuwendung und Aufmerksamkeit bekommt. Dies möchte er nie mehr missen. Er läuft prima an der Leine und ist ein regelmässiger Teilnehmer am Mentorprogramm jeden Samstag. Dann ist er glücklich, die Mentorinnen und Mentoren nehmen ihn mit auf einen Spaziergang und er kann für kurze Zeit die Tierheimmauern hinter sich lassen. Für ihn könnte jeder Tag ein Samstag sein. Leider sieht die Realität für ihn anders aus: Nach dem Spaziergang geht es zurück in den Zwinger und er wartet bis der nächste Samstag kommt. Mirko hat definitiv etwas anderes verdient. Er sollte nicht der Kälte und Hitze ausgesetzt sein, sondern ein liebevolles Daheim sein eigen nennen. Auch wenn Mirko schon älter ist, ist er noch munter unterwegs und durchaus bereit, noch das eine oder andere vom Hundeeinmaleins zu lernen. Das grösste Glück bedeutet für ihn, wenn er gemeinsam mit den Menschen etwas unternehmen kann und nah bei ihnen sein darf. Mirko wünscht sich ein Zuhause eher als Einzelprinz, wobei er draussen auf Spaziergängen Hundebegegnungen toll meistert. Uns liegt der allerliebste Mirko sehr am Herzen und wir wünschen uns, dass er das Tierheim doch noch verlassen kann und das Leben in einer Familie geniessen darf. Wir suchen dringend ein tolles Daheim, wo Mirko mit ganz viel Liebe, Fürsorge und Geborgenheit verwöhnt wird und wo man den Hundesenior so nimmt, wie er ist. Das Tierheim darf nicht Endstation für Mirko sein. Mirko ist so liebenswert und hat ganz viel Liebe zu geben und er soll endlich auch erfahren dürfen, wie es ist, ein richtiges Familienmitglied zu sein, jemand an seiner Seite zu haben, auf den er sich immer verlassen kann, spüren, dass er was wert ist und geliebt wird. Mirko wird ganz viel Liebe mit in sein neues Zuhause bringen. Mirko mussten 2 Zähne gezogen werden. Update 11.07.2026: Mirko ist der einzige Hund, der nicht gleich aus dem Zwinger hinausdrängt, wenn man ihn zum Spaziergang abholt. Das Erste, was er möchte, ist Liebe. Er holt sich seine Streicheleinheiten ab, umarmt einen regelrecht und will gar nicht mehr loslassen. Das berührt uns zutiefst. Und wenn es dann losgeht zum Spaziergang, zeigt sich, was für ein wunderbar angenehmer Begleiter er ist. Man hat fast das Gefühl, man bräuchte gar keine Leine, so selbstverständlich bleibt er bei dem Menschen, der ihm Aufmerksamkeit schenkt und etwas mit ihm unternimmt. Noch etwas, das uns die Augen öffnet: Mirko ist zurzeit der einzige Hund, der keine Hundehütte in seinem Zwinger hat, denn aus Frust und Langeweile beschädigt er sie. Das ist unendlich traurig, denn am Anfang war das nicht so. Es ist das Bild eines absoluten Notfalls. Mirko's halblange Rute wurde durchs Bundesamt für Veterinärwesen für die Einfuhr in die Schweiz genehmigt. Wir bedanken uns herzlich bei Nina Bellmont für die Übernahme der Patenschaft von Mirko. Mirko-5 darf im August 2026 auf Pflege in die Schweiz reisen.
