Nero

Staffordshire Bull Terrier · Male · Senior · 9 years

Please note: Nero is only suitable for husbandry in a shelter-like environment. In its new home, it must have the possibility to handle it with safety training (previously trained non-contact muzzle and leash fitting). Therefore, a fenced system must be present, where Nero can still have contact with people but is shielded from direct confrontation. A kennel (with heated indoor enclosure) and ideally a dog run with outdoor access would be ideal. Nero came to us through a rescue. The handsome fellow has had quite a bit of trouble. He already had five previous owners and there have been several serious biting incidents. Now he has landed with us, and we hope that even for a dog like him, outside of our shelter, a new beginning is still possible. Nero is quite irritated by people, their strange, unpredictable behaviors, and generally the constant back-and-forth of his past. His frustration tolerance towards people is therefore very low. He lacks the trust that the other end of the leash can offer understanding, clear structures, and safety. In handling with people, Nero always requires a muzzle, even with his closest trusted people. During walks, he sometimes turns around in certain situations. After acclimation, he can stay alone for about six hours and knows how to ride in public transportation. Generally, Nero then enjoys walks and contact with his trusted people. He is also well-leash trained and can behave well on walks. We know that Nero will never be suitable for a regular household. Unfortunately, too much has gone wrong in his past, leading to irreversible mistrust. Nevertheless, we hope that Nero will receive a home outside of our shelter with more individual attention, daily walks with dog walkers equipped with appropriate equipment for the husbandry of dangerous dogs.

About Nero

What life with Nero looks like

Nero is a medium-sized senior staffordshire bull terrier dog waiting at Tierheim Berlin Falkenberg in Berlin.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

Note from the shelter: Requires specialized facility with safety protocols, must always wear muzzle around humans, history of severe bite incidents, needs contactless handling training, suitable only for sanctuary-like environment with fencing system

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Nero, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Nero?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Berlin Falkenberg handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Nero on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Nero if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Berlin Falkenberg will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Nero already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Nero isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Berlin Falkenberg early rather than rehoming privately; they know Nero and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
