adoption requirements adoption process Now adopt this animal! adoption requirements adoption process Nikolaus has found his home! His story: 86643 Rennertshofen. The beautiful Nikolaus with the chocolate brown head is desperately searching for his home! He is in the best dog age and ready to explore the world. Nikolaus gets along super well with all dogs and is also very open and curious, making him the perfect companion for many activities. Originally from Zalau, Romania, Nikolaus suffered greatly under the conditions there… Nikolaus and his nine siblings were found by a student in a trash container. She brought them to a safe place, to her grandmother's farm. Unfortunately, two puppies did not make it and passed away. Three puppies were adopted locally. Hundemama Zyvah and five of her puppies were brought to a private shelter in Zalau. Herakles and Nikolaus were the last two siblings, who finally got the chance to travel. Nikolaus is currently around 1.5 – 2 years old and a handsome male dog. He is about 55 cm tall and weighs around 25 kg. Nikolaus is a dream puppy – friendly, curious, playful. He wants to explore the world, run and play, and experience adventures with his people. On the leash, he already walks well, but still needs some more practice. He loves walks, but the closeness to people and their attention and affection are the most important for him. For Nikolaus, we wish people who won't expect anything from him and will show him how a normal dog life works. He is a puppy who hasn't seen much of the world and spent his childhood and youth behind bars. With the loving care of our helpers and the visits of his rescuer, he was fortunate to experience a lot of human affection. Nikolaus still doesn't know what a "normal" life in a home is and has a lot to learn. He needs people with lots of love, time, and empathy who will give him an art-appropriate life with a positively reinforcing upbringing style. With his open and lively nature, he will always win hearts. What breed mix is in Nikolaus, we don't know, and we can't rule out herding dog or guard dog genes. Therefore, we wish for him a rural home with dog-experienced people who are familiar with the characteristics of these breeds or have even gained some experience with them. Herakles gets along very well with other dogs, and a confident single dog would further support him. He is already looking forward to a visit to dog training classes. Our handsome Nikolaus is neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, dewormed, and treated for fleas. He brings his EU pet passport with him and can be adopted after a positive home check. Even a foster home would be very helpful for him! Who will fall in love with this special little guy? Many thanks to Karola E.-S.! You gave Nikolaus his name and identity! Date: 01.01. This is a young, adolescent dog.

Stand: 01.01.2024

About Nikolaus

What life with Nikolaus looks like

Nikolaus is a large young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Ein Herz für Streuner e.V. in München.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Nikolaus, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Nikolaus?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Ein Herz für Streuner e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Nikolaus on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Nikolaus if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Ein Herz für Streuner e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Nikolaus already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Nikolaus isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Ein Herz für Streuner e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Nikolaus and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
