Adopt Niomi

Mixed Breed · Unknown

Dogs end up in shelters in many ways. There are dogs in need of help everywhere in Romania, and animal protection workers daily make decisions about which of the many shelter applicants need help the most. Since resources and space are limited, not all dogs in need can fit into the shelter kennels. In February 2024, the shelter staff received a call from a person who wanted to give up their dog. He had bought the dog as a puppy as a guard dog for his yard, but as the dog grew, problems with its eyes began to appear, and since the owner was not interested in taking care of the dog, he wanted to get rid of it. The dog, named Niomi, had lived his whole life in harsh conditions in the yard with poor care, so the staff decided to help him by taking him to the shelter kennel for care. Since then, the eye infection has been treated and Niomi would already be completely ready to travel to his own home. When he arrived at the shelter kennel, it was clear that life had not been kind to him. He was extremely thin and hid behind the corners of his kennel. However, gentle human interactions have gradually helped him, and he has steadily become more confident while staying at the shelter. He is still quite cautious and sensitive in unfamiliar situations, but his self-confidence has clearly been growing steadily. Even with strangers, he quickly relaxes, and then the enthusiastic and happy personality hidden under the shyness emerges, eager to be petted and clearly enjoying the attention he receives. As he gains confidence, he has revealed a very playful and mischievous side, and in a home environment, he is likely to reveal an even more adorable and lively personality. He has also tried outdoor walks in a harness at the shelter. Niomi has always lived alone in the shelter kennel, as initially he did not want to share his kennel with others. Later, he has met male dogs outside his kennel, and the meetings have gone smoothly as Niomi tries to play with his friends. Because of his breed, he is looking for a mature home with his own yard. It has been determined that Niomi has bilateral hip dysplasia at the shelter.

Niomilla on tarhalla todettu molemminpuolinen lonkkavika.

About Niomi

What life with Niomi looks like

Niomi is a adult mixed breed dog waiting at Embla Rescue in Helsinki.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇫🇮Adopting from Finland

Finnish shelters require a home visit and an adoption contract. Animals are vetted; the EU pet passport covers cross-border travel within the bloc.

Frequently asked

Adopting Niomi, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Niomi?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Embla Rescue handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Niomi on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Niomi if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Embla Rescue will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Niomi already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Niomi isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Embla Rescue early rather than rehoming privately; they know Niomi and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (FI). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
