Penny

Mixed Breed · Female · Young · 3 years

Large, rolling eyes that still look a bit uncertain into the camera, playful freckles, and an unmistakable pointer touch: Penny is the beauty who entered the care of our partners in Linares about a year ago. The approximately seven-year-old (as of May 2023) female dog was rescued together with several other dogs from a farm by our Spanish partners. Some of the four-legged friends were so traumatized that they had to be secured with a snare, their fear of bipeds was so great. Although Penny did not fall into this extreme category, she also behaved very reservedly towards humans at first. Now, Penny has come to understand that, apart from treats and loving words from the volunteers at the animal shelter, there is nothing to fear. She approaches these bipeds cautiously but always with a cheeky attitude, trying to make contact, though they still seem a bit suspicious to her. Cuddles now take Penny by surprise, and she seems to wonder how something so gruselig as a human hand can feel soooo good… Hopefully, this question will no longer trouble Penny someday, and she will simply enjoy the proximity of her familiar humans. Penny also appears, at least to me, in the photos to be much larger than her actual shoulder height of 38 cm—truly a space-saving specimen! Of course, Penny will never be a dog who greets strangers with a joyful jump, but to be honest, I’m no longer a fan of being booted by four-legged house guests either. With experienced people who value peace in their daily lives, Penny will surely open up, and who knows? Maybe you’ll witness the once shy girl discovering the clown within and sweeping through the garden with the most hilarious expressions. One thing I can guarantee you: should that happen, you’ll have tears of joy in your eyes!

About Penny

What life with Penny looks like

Penny is a large young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Penny, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Penny?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Penny on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Penny if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Penny already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Penny isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Penny and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
