Puma

Mixed Breed · Female · Adult · 4 years

Puma suffers from dental issues and Cauda-Equina Syndrome. Mixed-breed male dog, born in 2014. Disability: Dental problems and Cauda-Equina Syndrome. Originally from sunny Spain, PUMA came to his previous owner in 2014. In the summer of 2022, he was surrendered to us because his previous owner could no longer care for him due to significant health issues. So, in August 2022, PUMA moved into a foster home. At the foster home, he quickly gained trust and happily joined the female dog in his foster family. However, it was also noticed that he would quickly growl, bare his teeth, or even snap at the air. His frustration tolerance was extremely low. PUMA adapted to life better over time. He became more submissive and showed his foster family fewer teeth. He got along well with the female dog in his family, often inviting her to play. During walks, he soon displayed typical pack behavior and would still get nervous if his female dog was not visible. With much patience and consistency, he managed to overcome increasingly uncomfortable situations. Overall, PUMA is a very insecure fellow. He is constantly afraid of the unknown. Additionally, PUMA also has some health issues. He frequently struggles with dental problems, and several teeth have already been extracted. He also has several lipomas, which are harmless as long as they do not restrict his movements. In May 2023, a really bad news came. It turned out that he suffers from Cauda-Equina Syndrome. His nerves are compressed in the spinal canal, leading to pain in the lower back and hind legs, and can even cause paralysis if it progresses. Now, he receives a monthly injection for the pain, and we hope that the problem does not worsen, as otherwise, he would need a major operation. Currently, he is undergoing physiotherapy to counteract the process. Since it is extremely difficult for PUMA to adapt to new situations, he is now allowed to stay in his familiar environment with his foster family, which fully accepts him and knows how to handle him. Now, we are looking for loving people who would like to contribute to PUMA's well-being by taking on a sponsorship, covering the costs of food, veterinary care, and physiotherapy. Here is more information on how to become a sponsor or send us a message.

About Puma

What life with Puma looks like

Puma is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzinitiative Odenwald in Wald-Michelbach.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Puma, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Puma?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzinitiative Odenwald handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Puma on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Puma if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzinitiative Odenwald will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Puma already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Puma isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzinitiative Odenwald early rather than rehoming privately; they know Puma and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
