Rex

Mixed Breed Cat · Male · Adult · 4 years

Rex Breed DSH Gender Male, neutered Born Ca. 2022 Rex lived at our shelter since February 2026, having previously lived with a female dog (Rina) and sharing a run with her at the shelter. Both can be rehomed separately. Rex is very loving and open with people, and he is delighted with any attention. He also runs well on a leash outside. During dog encounters, he sometimes argues. We suspect that he had little contact with fellow animals before (except with Rina). However, Rex is very trainable and attentive. And the training exercises together with our dog training classes are already showing good results. In his previous life, Rex had probably had little movement. When he arrived at the shelter, he was very lethargic. This has improved significantly thanks to regular walks. A check-up with the vet showed that despite his young age, Rex already has moderate hip arthritis. Fortunately, his nerves and spine are not damaged. Rex is now receiving dog physiotherapy with us at the shelter, which will surely benefit him. We are looking for people who can still safely lead Rex when he has put on a few more kilos; currently, he weighs around 35 kilos. Experience with herding dogs would be a definite advantage. We do not want to place the large fellow in a small rental apartment or with small children. A home without too many stairs would be desirable. If you are interested in one of our dogs, please send us an email and share a few things that are interesting for a dog placement: experience with dogs; living situation; are there children and/or other pets in the household; how long must the dog be left alone during the day. Please provide a phone number for follow-up questions.

About Rex

What life with Rex looks like

Rex is a large adult mixed breed cat dog waiting at Ria-Nickel-Tierheim Homburg in Homburg/Saar.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Rex, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Rex?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Ria-Nickel-Tierheim Homburg handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Rex on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Rex if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Ria-Nickel-Tierheim Homburg will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Rex already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Rex isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Ria-Nickel-Tierheim Homburg early rather than rehoming privately; they know Rex and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
