Sandy

Mixed Breed · Female · Adult · 4 years

Sandy was given to us at the animal shelter by their former owners due to overburdening. Sandy came as a puppy from another animal welfare organization from abroad to Germany. Despite attending dog training classes, the former owners were no longer able to cope with the young female dog. Sandy is a female dog who, in the beginning, acts very cautiously in new situations and with new people. With people, her behavior settles quickly, and she wants to be liked. She appropriately requests affection from her people. In new environments, Sandy needs a bit more time to master the environmental stimuli she is unfamiliar with. Sandy’s insecurity is also evident in her behavior when touched at certain body parts. In such situations, she could bite out of self-defense if the possibility of escape is not given. As an imported dog, Sandy shows typical guardian behavior. On the leash, her behavior can be easily interrupted. At home, she might try to control movements. This typical behavior could involve a bite. Through consistent handling, her behavior can be well managed. Sandy gets along well with other animals as long as they are not overly intrusive. We are looking for a new home for Sandy that is more rural, as she does not seem particularly happy with the turbulent city life. Her new people should ideally already have experience with dogs and be willing to invest time in working with her on her behavior. Other animals should not be present in the new home. Children should be old enough to understand how to handle a guardian dog. If you are interested in Sandy, please write us a substantive email or call us.

About Sandy

What life with Sandy looks like

Sandy is a adult mixed breed dog waiting at Kolner Tierschutzverein in Köln.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Sandy, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Sandy?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Kolner Tierschutzverein handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Sandy on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Sandy if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Kolner Tierschutzverein will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Sandy already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Sandy isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Kolner Tierschutzverein early rather than rehoming privately; they know Sandy and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
