Tara

Mixed Breed · Female

The dog Tara was born in 2011 and came to us at the animal shelter as a private surrender. Tara is a confident female dog who knows exactly what she wants - or doesn't want. She initially appears neutral towards strangers. When touched, she usually responds hesitantly and takes some distance if possible to assess the situation calmly. If given the time she needs, Tara often comes to you on her own - although sometimes a bit hesitantly. Definitely winning Tara's heart are treats of any kind, but beware: sometimes she becomes upset and agitated, and may even pinch your finger. With sufficient patience and support, Tara can certainly learn to wait and hold back in the context of food. With familiar people, Tara is very accessible and enjoys petting very much. She often holds her head still for scratching. Due to age-related physical discomforts, certain body areas may be sensitive to touch. In such cases, Tara may try to create distance by snapping. So far, she has not shown any real biting while in our care. As our current oldest resident, Tara likes to retreat to her basket when there is too much commotion. Nevertheless, she enjoys walks in a quiet environment - even though these may not be very long due to her age. Various types of head work bring her great joy. With patience and empathy, beautiful shared moments can also be experienced outside of walks. True to the motto: "He who rests, rusts - also in the mind." In contact with other dogs, Tara is generally compatible. However, as is often the case, sympathy is decisive here, so compatibility should be tested on an individual basis. Tara knows life in a multi-dog household from her previous home as well as from her time with us. Her hearing and eyesight have decreased with age - this should be taken into account in daily life. This is what we are looking for in Tara: people with heart, patience and experience who would like to give her a loving home once again. People who can convey a sense of security to her. A place where she can arrive and feel at home. To experience once more what it means to arrive and enjoy her golden years to the fullest. This is what we wish very much for our Tara! Ideally, a ground-floor, quiet home, preferably in a rural area. Children in the household should already be older and know and practice a respectful way of dealing with dogs. Tara is microchipped, vaccinated, and unspayed. She has age-related physical limitations and an increase in bladder size, which is monitored by a professional animal protection expert and medically supported. About Tara

What life with Tara looks like

Tara is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Brandenburg an der Havel in Brandenburg.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Tara, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Tara?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Brandenburg an der Havel handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Tara on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Tara if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Brandenburg an der Havel will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Tara already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Tara isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Brandenburg an der Havel early rather than rehoming privately; they know Tara and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
