Tara

Labrador Retriever · Female · Senior · 9 years

Overindulged Princess" Breed: Labrador-mixed breed Birthdate: Dec. 2013 Size: just over knee-high In the animal shelter since: Oct. 2023 Gets along with dogs: yes (according to the previous owner) Has children in the same household: no Looking for a home: outskirts of town or countryside, barrier-free The friendly Lab-mix senior Tara needs a short getting-to-know-you phase with people to build trust. Tara lived in a house in the countryside, is house-trained, could stay alone in her last home, knows basic commands, and rides politely in the car. Although she reportedly defended her food against other animals according to the previous owner, she should be the only animal in her future home, although she is also compatible with cats. What Tara doesn't want is to be pressured, so it would be safest if no children lived in the same household. Additionally, the dear oldie has an issue with defending food and handling. Therefore, Tara needs people who accept and respect this and manage situations accordingly, as a bite incident already occurred with the food-defending behavior of the previous owners. For Tara, we are looking for a barrier-free home in the outskirts of town or countryside where she is spoiled but not pressured.

About Tara

What life with Tara looks like

Tara is a medium-sized senior labrador retriever dog waiting at Tierschutz Austria in Vienna.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇦🇹Adopting from Austria

Austrian shelters follow the federal Tierschutzgesetz framework: adopters sign a Schutzvertrag (protection contract) committing to the animal's welfare. Spay/neuter, microchip, and vaccinations are included; fees typically range €150–€350.

Frequently asked

Adopting Tara, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Tara?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutz Austria handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Tara on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Tara if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutz Austria will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Tara already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Tara isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutz Austria early rather than rehoming privately; they know Tara and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
