Adopt Vilma

German Shepherd · Female · Senior · 9 years

Vilma lived in a village with Laika and Linda, where she and her owner would roam the countryside together. They were always off-leash, free, and happy. On their walks, they would meet hikers and their dogs, and there were never any problems. The misfortune began for them when her owner passed away, and no one wanted to take care of them. So they were brought to Melampo. Vilma is a quiet, calm, and affectionate female dog. When playing with her, she is always up for it. She is loving towards the volunteer helpers and actively seeks the company of people to get cuddles and attention. She loves having her fur brushed. She travels well in the car. Even walking on a leash is good for her, although she was never leashed in her earlier life and was always free. Vilma is a bit possessive when it comes to food, but not with toys or other dogs. In the run in the large group, she did well from the start. She has also lived with cats, chickens, and donkeys. Thankfully, all Mediterranean diseases tested negative for Vilma. Vilma did not live in the house with her old owner but always outdoors. Before coming to Melampo, however, she was allowed to live in a house for 2 weeks with a volunteer helper, where she behaved impeccably and was already house-trained. We still want to emphasize that, due to the change and the journey to Switzerland, dogs often become stressed, and it is important to give Vilma time and patience to learn all the house rules. We wish the dear Vilma that she finds her people again and can have a happy life. Here’s how to apply.

About Vilma

What life with Vilma looks like

Vilma is a senior german shepherd dog waiting at Melampo in Melampo.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇨🇭Adopting from Switzerland

Swiss shelters require a home visit (Platzkontrolle) and proof of suitable accommodation. Cantons each have their own additional dog-keeping requirements (e.g. SKN training in some areas). Animals leave sterilized and chipped.

Frequently asked

Adopting Vilma, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Vilma?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Melampo handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Vilma on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Vilma if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Melampo will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Vilma already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Vilma isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Melampo early rather than rehoming privately; they know Vilma and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
