Willy Wonka

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 4 years

Willy came to the shelter as a surrendered dog because his owners were overwhelmed with him. The neutered Kangal mix originally comes from Romania and lived in a family. Typical of his breed, he initially observes situations from a distance and assesses the situation first. Once he realizes there is no danger, he becomes relatively open, approaches people, and shows himself friendly. He quickly becomes playful with his caregivers and enjoys playing a game with them. He can sometimes be a bit over-the-top. Due to his skepticism and caution, he cannot tolerate aggressive behavior and may show a more or less massive defensive reaction in stressful situations. So far, he has been unobtrusive in the shelter and is fair to everyone who is fair to him. However, he has shown in the past that he can also jump out of his skin. His social behavior with other dogs is good, and he gets along well with his peers. He is more straightforward with females than with males. With males, it depends on their sympathy, and he does not let anyone take the butter off his bread. He can communicate well, but he can also clearly express his opinion. He never loses his composure or becomes hysterical. Willy also does very well on walks: leash-friendly, responsiveness, recall, and everyday suitability are always present with Willy, even if he is sometimes worried. Due to past incidents, we see in Willy

About Willy Wonka

What life with Willy Wonka looks like

Willy Wonka is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Burgdorf in Burgdorf.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Dogs and cats typically leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with an EU pet passport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Willy Wonka, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Willy Wonka?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Burgdorf handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Willy Wonka on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Willy Wonka if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Burgdorf will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Willy Wonka already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Willy Wonka isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Burgdorf early rather than rehoming privately; they know Willy Wonka and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
