Zelda

American Bully · Male · Young · 3 years

Breed: American Bully Age: 18-02-2023 Other features: Mild aortic stenosis Can be with other dogs: No Can be with cats: No Can live in an apartment: No, house with a garden Can be with children: Yes, 16+ This beautiful, clownish lady lived in a dirty, unhygienic caravan. It was very messy, there was no food and Zelda's drinking water was cloudy. The owner said he didn't have enough time for the dog. Zelda was eventually taken into custody and is now looking for a new home. Zelda has not seen much in her life. New locations, objects and people can be initially exciting. She likes to get to know new people, but on her own terms. When she trusts you, she likes to sit on your lap and ask for love. Tennis balls are fun and we see Zelda playing more and more. Where she was initially afraid of a bouncing tennis ball, toys that made noise or toys that were thrown, we see a steadily more enthusiastic Zelda. Bit by bit, she is becoming more open and we are overjoyed that her world is getting bigger and bigger. Zelda knows 'sit'; other commands are not yet known. Fortunately, she loves food and wants to learn new things. For people who want to train at her pace: Zelda is eager! At the veterinarian, aortic stenosis was diagnosed. Nothing needs to be done further, but this means that Zelda can get short of breath more easily. She continues to find noises exciting. Too much noise and unpredictability will be stressors for Zelda. She does not react well to other dogs. A smaller family, possibly with older children, is definitely an option.

About Zelda

What life with Zelda looks like

Zelda is a young adult american bully dog waiting at Dierenasiel Genk in Genk.

A young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇧🇪Adopting from Belgium

Belgian shelters operate under regional law (Flanders, Wallonia, Brussels each have their own rules). All adoptions include the Eurochip, vaccinations, and a stewardship contract. Several Flemish shelters partner with Dutch and German rescue networks.

Frequently asked

Adopting Zelda, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Zelda?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dierenasiel Genk handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Zelda on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Zelda if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dierenasiel Genk will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Zelda already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Zelda isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dierenasiel Genk early rather than rehoming privately; they know Zelda and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
