Zena

Maltese · Female · Young · 1 year

Meet Zena, she is an 11 month old Maltese looking for her forever home to settle her paws. Zena has had an unsettled start to life so is dreaming of a patient family in a quiet home where she can slowly adjust and feel safe. Zena is real character who loves to play with her toys, say hello to other dogs and head off on adventures. She can time to warm up to new people but once comfortable, she is an affectionate girl. She has come on leaps and bounds with her confidence in her foster home and shows great potential to continue to flourish. Zena is looking for an adult only home that are keen to get stuck in with her training. Zena has shown resource guarding behaviours and can be wary of new people so she would not be suitable to have visiting children to the home. As she can be reactive towards new people, Zena requires to be kept on her lead out on walks and would like a home with the ability to separate her from any unknown visitors. She would also love a family that like quiet walks away from busy environments. Zena is friendly towards other dogs so could potentially share her home with a calmer dog pending successful meets, males must be neutered. Zena cannot share her home with cats but small furries may be considered if they are kept completely separately.

About Zena

What life with Zena looks like

Zena is a small young adult maltese dog waiting at Dogs Trust Manchester in Manchester.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Zena, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Zena?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dogs Trust Manchester handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Zena on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Zena if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dogs Trust Manchester will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Zena already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Zena isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dogs Trust Manchester early rather than rehoming privately; they know Zena and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
