Mountain hiking is among the most beautiful activities to do with a dog. But with awareness. The first rule to respect seems obvious, but it is not at all, since often people who go with their dog only think about their own abilities and physical condition (sometimes not even that!), as if it were obvious that the dog can handle any elevation gain and any length of the route. Instead, the hike must be appropriate for the dog, its health status, age, size, level of training, and resistance to fatigue. Medium or large dogs should be taken into the mountains only after one year of age, but they should not face elevation gains, which will have to be waited for another six months, considering that a longer route will require less elevation gain and vice versa. Small dogs and brachycephalic breeds tend to tire more easily, and therefore the route must be proportional to their abilities. There is also the belief that the dog in the mountains (as an area outside the city) can always be let off the leash, so that it finally fulfills its desire to run and sniff. This is a very common way of thinking, typical of people who in the best case are simply unprepared and poorly informed, but who often also show arrogance and overconfidence. In reality, the dog can never be left off the leash if it can pose a danger, for example, to other hikers, skiers, cyclists, visitors or managers of mountain huts, and so on, or if there is a ban (which sometimes is even an access prohibition) to protect protected areas and natural parks. However, outside these situations, the main reason for not letting the dog off the leash when it does not respond promptly to the owner's calls is the need to protect the wildlife: a dog that chases one of the many wild animals present in the mountains endangers not only the life of the wild animal (which, even if not injured or killed by the dog, can still injure itself or at least weaken due to the chase and thus become more vulnerable to predation by other wild animals), but also its own life due to possible contact with sick wild animals (rabies, tuberculosis, but also Aujeszky's disease, caused by a virus whose natural host is the wild boar and for which there is no effective treatment). L'escursione in montagna è tra le attività più belle da fare con il cane. Ma con coscienza. La primissima regola da rispettare sembra ovvia, ma non lo è affatto, dato che spesso chi si accompagna al cane pensa soltanto alle capacità proprie e alla propria condizione fisica (talvolta neppure a questa!), quasi fosse scontato che il cane possa affrontare qualsiasi dislivello e qualsiasi durata del percorso. Invece, l’escursione deve essere adeguata al cane, al suo stato di salute, alla sua età e taglia e al suo livello di allenamento e al grado di resistenza alla fatica. Cani di taglia media o grande dovrebbero essere condotti in montagna solo dopo l’anno di età ma senza che debbano affrontare dislivelli, per affrontare i quali bisognerà attendere altri 6 mesi, tenendo conto che un percorso più lungo dovrà comportare meno dislivello e viceversa. I cani di piccola taglia e le razze brachicefale tendono ad affaticarsi più facilmente e quindi il percorso dovrà essere proporzionato alle loro capacità. C'è poi la convinzione che il cane in montagna (in quanto area extraurbana) possa essere lasciato libero sempre, in modo che finalmente dia sfogo al proprio desiderio di correre e annusare. E' un modo di pensare frequentissimo, proprio di persone che nell'ipotesi migliore sono solo sprovvedute e poco informate, ma che spesso brillano anche per arroganza e prepotenza. In realtà, il cane non può mai essere lasciato libero se è in grado di arrecare pericolo ad esempio, ad altri escursionisti, a sciatori, a ciclisti, ad avventori o gestori dei rifugi, e così via o se c'è un divieto (che talvolta è addirittura di accesso) a salvaguardia di aree protette e di parchi naturali. Ma al di fuori di tali fattispecie, la motivazione principale per non lasciare libero il cane che non risponde prontamente ai richiami del conduttore è la necessità di tutelare la fauna selvatica: un cane che rincorre uno dei molti animali selvatici presenti in montagna mette in pericolo non solo la vita del selvatico (che se anche non verrà ferito o ucciso dal cane potrà però ferirsi o comunque indebolirsi per l’inseguimento ed esporsi così a una più facile predazione da parte di altri selvatici), ma anche la propria per l’eventuale contatto con esemplari selvatici malati (rabbia, tubercolosi, ma anche la malattia di Aujeszky, causata da un virus che ha come ospite naturale il cinghiale e per la quale non esiste un trattamento efficace).
