Când am intrat prima dată în spațiul lui Melpo pentru a o examina cu atenție și a prelua un eșantion de sânge, am avut mari dificultăți! Și motivul pentru care am luptat a fost că în momentul în care a văzut pe noi, s-a întins pe spate, cerând un atingere blândă, o mică contact. Vezi, ea venise de la shelter-ul municipal din Krestena, iar tot ce reușisem să observăm inițial a fost un câine calm și rezervat, suportând cu răbdare orice se întâmpla cu ea. Am frecat iarna ei, am numărat pe corpul ei subțire semnele lăsării și foamei, am luat sângele ei și am trecut la următorul câine. Și ea a rămas în urmă, ne privind cu un privire tristă și nelămurită, ca și cum ar fi gândit: „Ce se va întâmpla acum?” Ceea ce a urmat în perioada următoare a fost simplu: a mâncat bine, s-a odihnit, s-a relaxat și a primit îngrijirea veterinară de care avea nevoie. Asta era nevoie lui Melpo, cel puțin la început. Dar a fost suficient pentru a schimba ceva în interiorul ei. Tristețea din ochii ei din primele zile s-a transformat într-o privire luminată, încrezătoare, plină de curiozitate și interes față de tot și toți. Acum Melpo poartă harnisa ei, merge la plimbare cu voluntarii noștri, bărbați și femei din toate vârstele, întâlnește celelalte câini din shelter și îi salută fără probleme. Ea apreciază contactul uman, îi place să stea lângă persoana care o duce la plimbare și pur și simplu să ia totul în considerare, iar îi place să observe tot ceea ce se întâmplă în jurul ei. Tristețea din ochii ei nu va mai reveni, pentru că i-am promis că o familie va fi găsită, una care își va deschide casa pentru ea, iar Melpo va rămâne acolo pentru totdeauna.

When we first entered Melpo’s space to examine her carefully and take a blood sample, we had a hard time! And the reason we struggled was that the moment she saw us, she rolled onto her back, asking for a gentle touch, a bit of contact. You see, she had just arrived from the municipal shelter of Krestena, and all we had managed to notice at first was a calm and subdued dog, patiently enduring whatever was happening to her. We stroked her belly, counted on her thin body the marks left by neglect and starvation, took her blood, and moved on to the next dog. And she stayed behind, watching us with a sad and puzzled look, as if she were thinking: “What will happen now?” What followed in the next period was simple: she ate well, rested, relaxed, and received the veterinary care she needed. That’s what Melpo needed, at least in the beginning. But it was enough to change something inside her. The sadness in her eyes from those first days turned into a bright, confident look, full of curiosity and interest in everything and everyone. Now our Melpo wears her harness, goes on walks with our volunteers, men and women of all ages, meets the other dogs at the shelter and greets them without any issues. She enjoys human contact, she loves sitting beside the person who walks her and simply taking it all in, and she likes observing everything around her. The sadness in her eyes will never return, because we’ve promised her that a family will be found, one that will open their home to her, and Melpo will stay there forever.
