Adoptar a Melpo

Cuando entramos por primera vez al espacio de Melpo para examinarla cuidadosamente y tomar una muestra de sangre, tuvimos muchas dificultades. Y la razón por la que luchamos fue que en el momento en que ella nos vio, se volteó boca arriba, pidiendo un toque suave, un poco de contacto. Verán, había llegado recientemente del refugio municipal de Krestena, y lo único que logramos notar al principio fue un perro tranquilo y apagado, paciente ante lo que le estaba sucediendo. Le acariciamos el vientre, contamos en su cuerpo delgado las marcas dejadas por el descuido y el hambre, tomamos su sangre y pasamos al siguiente perro. Y ella quedó atrás, mirándonos con una mirada triste y confundida, como si estuviera pensando: "¿Qué pasará ahora?" Lo que siguió en el siguiente período fue sencillo: comió bien, descansó, se relajó y recibió la atención veterinaria que necesitaba. Eso es lo que Melpo necesitaba, al menos al principio. Pero fue suficiente para cambiar algo dentro de ella. La tristeza en sus ojos de los primeros días se convirtió en una mirada brillante y segura, llena de curiosidad e interés por todo y todos. Ahora nuestra Melpo lleva su arnés, hace caminatas con nuestros voluntarios, hombres y mujeres de todas las edades, conoce a los otros perros en el refugio y los saluda sin ningún problema. Disfruta del contacto humano, ama sentarse al lado de la persona que la lleva a pasear y simplemente absorber todo, y le gusta observar todo lo que ocurre a su alrededor. La tristeza en sus ojos nunca regresará, porque le hemos prometido que se encontrará una familia, que abrirá su hogar para ella, y Melpo permanecerá allí para siempre.

When we first entered Melpo’s space to examine her carefully and take a blood sample, we had a hard time! And the reason we struggled was that the moment she saw us, she rolled onto her back, asking for a gentle touch, a bit of contact. You see, she had just arrived from the municipal shelter of Krestena, and all we had managed to notice at first was a calm and subdued dog, patiently enduring whatever was happening to her. We stroked her belly, counted on her thin body the marks left by neglect and starvation, took her blood, and moved on to the next dog. And she stayed behind, watching us with a sad and puzzled look, as if she were thinking: “What will happen now?” What followed in the next period was simple: she ate well, rested, relaxed, and received the veterinary care she needed. That’s what Melpo needed, at least in the beginning. But it was enough to change something inside her. The sadness in her eyes from those first days turned into a bright, confident look, full of curiosity and interest in everything and everyone. Now our Melpo wears her harness, goes on walks with our volunteers, men and women of all ages, meets the other dogs at the shelter and greets them without any issues. She enjoys human contact, she loves sitting beside the person who walks her and simply taking it all in, and she likes observing everything around her. The sadness in her eyes will never return, because we’ve promised her that a family will be found, one that will open their home to her, and Melpo will stay there forever.
